About Scalar:

we are a small team of engineers and designers who want to make API development better & more accessible for everyone — so we’re creating a suite of open-source OpenAPI tools. we fully embrace open standards and invest in our open-source community. do all great businesses start in garages? hopefully not, since Scalar’s story began in Marc’s kitchen pantry (deuces photo below).

What we are looking for:

  • Typescript developers comfortable with operating independently within a small team

  • Developers who can take broad ownership over features. See concepts from conception to production deployment while working between teams.

  • Developers who like an in-house first approach. We constantly strive to reduce external dependencies

  • Strong communications skills; people who operate with a high level of kindness

  • Proven ability to deliver on features quickly with a high level of quality

  • Remote workers located in Western Canada and USA are preferred

Responsibilities:

  • Develop features at the edge between the frontend and backend

  • Create and manage data pipelines for processing OpenAPI documents

  • Manage and improve our typescript microservice ecosystem

  • Mentor junior developers and participate in planning and review for backend services

Required skills:

  • 5+ years of development experience (stack independent)

  • Strong typescript skills

Bonus Points:

  • Experience with OpenAPI and JSON Schema

  • Experience with GCP deployment

  • Experience with Kubernetes

  • Love for SSR

  • Past experience mentoring junior developers

Other Notes:

  • While the role will involve a significant portion of backend service management, the candidate will also be expected to contribute to the frontend and may be asked to lead the development of new features in either space.

  • We are a small team of 10+ developers and wear many hats. We expect everyone to pitch in and help out where needed.

  • We are open to both fixed-term contract and full-time permanent positions. Compensation Range: $150-250k (CAD)/$105-180 (USD) based on experience

San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area attracts more startup funding than any other region in the world. Home to Stanford University and UC Berkeley, leading VC firms and several of the world’s most valuable companies, the Bay Area is the place to go for anyone looking to make it big in the tech industry. Key Facts About San Francisco Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 365,500; 13.9% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Google, Apple, Salesforce, Meta
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, fintech, consumer technology, software
  • Funding Landscape: $50.5 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Greylock Partners, Khosla Ventures, Kleiner Perkins
