Staff Software Engineer, Search Backend

Turo's Search Platform is looking for brilliant software engineers who have a passion for consumer products and want to join an energetic team that is changing the way people think about travel. We ship code daily, A/B test extensively, and have a primary role in creating the product from inception to implementation. There’s much to do, and you’ll be responsible for making some real cool stuff happen.

• You will build scalable, low-latency, highly available distributed systems that power and evolve the infrastructure behind our Search Platform.

• You will collaborate extensively with product management, design, and engineers to develop product features that drive our metrics.

• You will produce high-quality maintainable code, test it, collaboratively review it and ship it.

• You will identify areas to improve and scale our architecture and application design.

• You will develop tools and utilities to diagnose and fix problems.

• Ensure proper technical design and documentation.

• Work efficiently in a constantly changing and growing environment where the process is fluid and creative solutions are desired.

• Typically a minimum of 7+ years experience shipping high-scale code to production.

• Hands-on experience with search engines (Opensearch or Elasticsearch)

• Strong proficiency in cloud-native architectures (AWS, Kubernetes, etc.)

• Fluent in at least one language - e.g., Java, Python, Ruby, Go, or C

• Possess strong computer science fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, database concepts, distributed systems, and search.

• Enjoy solving problems and helping others meet their goals.

• Passionate about search, streaming, database or other backend technologies.

• Bachelor's/Master’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science or related field

• Experience working with ML-based ranking infrastructure.

• Strong communicator. Explaining complex technical concepts to designers, support, and other engineers is no problem for you. 

For this role, the target base salary range in San Francisco is $182,000 - $228,000 annually. This role is also eligible for equity and benefits. In general, our ranges reflect the market-based target for new hire salaries based on the level and location of the role. Within the range, individual pay is determined by objective factors assessed during the application and interview process, such as job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Turo highly values having employees working in-office to foster a collaborative work environment and company culture. This role will be in-office on a hybrid schedule — Turists will be expected to work in the office 3 days per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
