At ClimateAi, we choose to act.

We believe resilience is just as urgent as mitigation. We are building technology to empower people and industries to make smarter, faster decisions in the face of weather volatility.

Our mission is to climate-proof the global economy, with the goal of achieving zero loss of lives, livelihoods, and nature. From farmers and supply chain managers to risk analysts and policymakers, our users depend on ClimateAi’s forecasts and insights to prepare for what’s coming and take action in time.

In 2022, ClimateAi was recognized by TIME Magazine’s Best Inventions, alongside innovators like OpenAI, for our breakthrough work in climate resilience technology.

What if your next position helped protect entire communities and safeguard the future of food, water, and livelihoods?

As a Staff Software Engineer, Backend, you will build and scale the systems that power ClimateAi’s platforms. You will architect services that turn climate data and models into outputs that help people and organizations act with confidence. From global supply chain risk dashboards to crop yield forecasts, your work will ensure our systems are reliable, performant, and built for long-term growth.

We combine the latest advancements in AI, geospatial data processing, machine learning, and agronomic process-based models to simplify decision-making for our customers. We’re looking for experienced engineers with deep expertise in backend development, cloud infrastructure, and architectural design—engineers who thrive on solving hard problems and shaping technical direction.

You’ll collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of engineers, climate scientists, researchers, and product leaders who share a strong sense of urgency and purpose.

We are growing our in-person presence at our new San Francisco, CA office and are looking for engineers excited to build things.

You can help shape a more resilient future, if you choose to act.

At ClimateAi, we value engineers who bring depth in their craft and curiosity beyond it. As a Staff Software Engineer – Backend, you will play a key role in shaping both the systems we build and the teams that build them. You will help guide product direction, mentor other engineers, and contribute to cross-functional efforts that span the organization.

This role blends hands-on backend development with technical leadership. You will design distributed systems, optimize cloud infrastructure, and ensure our platforms are scalable, resilient, and easy to build on. We are looking for someone who enjoys solving complex problems, elevating the work of others, and building technology with real-world impact.

We're building a new version of our platform from the ground up. As such, we're looking for someone who thrives in fast-moving environments, is excited by the opportunity to shape foundational architecture and workflows, and wants to play a central role in making key technical decisions that will influence the product for years to come.

Desired Background
  • 8+ years of software engineering experience, including time in a senior or staff-level role.
  • Proven ability to design and scale complex, distributed backend systems.
  • Strong backend development experience with Python, Go, Java, Node.js, or similar.
  • Deep experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred, GCP acceptable), including designing, deploying, and monitoring production systems.
  • Strong architectural thinking and long-term system design skills.
  • Experience leading cross-functional projects and setting technical direction.
  • Comfort with DevOps responsibilities in a small engineering team environment (CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code, observability).
  • Track record of mentoring and leveling up other engineers.
  • Clear communicator who can align technical decisions with product goals.

Bonus (not required):

  • Familiarity with climate data, geospatial systems, or AI/ML integration.
  • Experience in an early-stage startup.

Compensation

The base compensation range for employees based in the US is $175,000-250,000 and equity in line with experience and company stage. This salary range may be inclusive of several career levels at ClimateAi and will be narrowed during the interview process based on a number of factors, including the candidate’s experience, qualifications, business need and US location.

What We Offer You

  • Competitive salary and equity
  • Medical, dental, vision benefits
  • Learning budget per year
  • Unlimited PTO policy with minimum time off requirements
  • Flexible working hours on many teams
  • Culture of diversity and inclusion including employee resource groups
  • Work with smart, curious, passionate people and be part of the mission to help the world

At ClimateAi we are driven by a united passion to tackle climate change. We believe in a culture of trust and transparency, where feedback is considered an opportunity for us to contribute to each other's personal and professional growth. We recognize the value of diversity and are an equal-opportunity employer. We hire people who are collaborative, adaptable, communicate well, and love to learn. Expect to give and receive constructive feedback, as we are constantly seeking to push the innovation frontier while simultaneously growing as individuals and as a team.
