Company Overview

Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. At Joby, we've been working to make that dream a reality since 2009 and we're now in the final stages of certifying our aircraft with the FAA. With plans to launch our aircraft in the US and Dubai, we're now scaling manufacturing and preparing for the launch of our commercial service.

Overview

The Supplier Industrialization Engineering team is responsible for critical component development and qualification activities at suppliers. The role involves communicating well with internal and external teams, traveling to suppliers in different regions, and on-the-spot critical decision-making. The goal: delivering on-time quantities of high-quality component parts into production processes to enable extremely rapid development cycles and product launches. In this role, you will be the primary technical authority for a portfolio of commodities across our supply chain, which may include composites, sheet metal, machined parts, extrusions, bonded and fastened assemblies, hardware, injection molded parts, mechanical assemblies, additive manufacturing, and purchased non-COTS components.

Responsibilities
  • Assess supplier capability, starting at RFQ and source selection, against design requirements, and build development plans to close gaps in tooling, equipment, process control, and workforce skill before production commitments are made
  • Partner early with Design, Quality, and Manufacturing on design for manufacturability, including tolerance, material and process selection, and inspection feasibility, and provide input on new or alternative materials and processes
  • Define tooling and inspection fixture strategy with suppliers, including tooling design review, gauging approach, and tooling qualification, so processes are repeatable before release to production
  • Lead New Product Introduction (NPI) at suppliers from advanced development through mass production qualification, including readiness reviews, First Article Inspection (AS9102), process validation, and production part approval, and guide suppliers in developing robust processes and procedures for efficient, seamless production of high-quality parts
  • Support ramp to rate through capacity planning, tooling duplication, and bottleneck removal so suppliers can scale without losing process control
  • Translate technical requirements between suppliers and Purchasing, Quality, and Design teams, and determine the ideal performance specifications and launch readiness metrics
  • Validate supplier corrective actions involving design and/or process changes to ensure they are robust, sustainable, and implemented for similar potential concerns across manufacturing lines and/or suppliers
  • Build and improve the tools, templates, and methods the team uses to industrialize suppliers quickly in a fast-paced, innovative environment

Required
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial, Mechanical, Aerospace, Materials, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of experience in industrial, manufacturing, process engineering, supplier development, and/or supplier quality engineering
  • A deep understanding of product technologies and manufacturing processes for at least one of the commodities listed in the overview
  • Experience taking parts from prototype to production at an external supplier or contract manufacturer
  • In-depth knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and inspection
  • Organized with a good balance between delegation and capacity to deep dive into tactical issues when required
  • Demonstrable leadership abilities
  • Ability to travel up to 50% of the time, both domestic and international, with a valid passport or ability to obtain one

Desired
  • Experience in quality systems: AS9100 and AS9102 First Article Inspection (FAI)
  • Experience with process validation tools: Process Flow Diagrams, Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (PFMEA), Control Plans, Process Capability (Cpk), and other elements of the Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) / Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP)
  • Root cause and corrective action experience (8D, 5-Why, fishbone)
  • Familiarity with special process requirements (NADCAP)
  • Experience with FAA-certified or other highly regulated products
  • Six Sigma Green/Black Belt with SPC experience
  • Experience with tooling design or tooling qualification
