Hardware Engineering is a diverse, innovative, and collaborative group of electrical, mechanical, reliability, software and vehicle engineers. We design, build, and perfect the products which are the eyes and ears of Waymo's autonomous driving technology, and integrate those products into vehicle platforms. We're seeking curious and talented teammates to keep us moving in the right direction.
You will:
- Derive requirements for positioning and compute subsystems in the Waymo Driver, from accuracy, safety, fault tolerance and reliability targets.
- Maintain scalable requirements for multiple compute and vehicle platforms, and ensure sufficient coverage.
- Work with test engineers to sign off hardware and/or software subsystems for driverless operation
- Build analysis tools (e.g. dashboards, database queries, scripts) for large-scale analyses of Waymo’s massive datasets. Define and track key performance metrics based on safety, product, and reliability needs.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams of engineers to solve complex technical challenges, and contribute to a culture of clear communication and high standards.
You have:
- 3+ years of Systems Engineering experience designing or testing positioning systems (GNC, inertial navigation, mapping, localization, state estimation)
- Direct experience in systems engineering for complex hardware/software systems: requirements definition, verification and validation methods, and simulation
- Demonstrated experience writing code to analyze data (e.g. Python, SQL, C/C++, MATLAB)
- Good team player with great communication and collaboration skills
- Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field (e.g. Mechanical, Computer, Electrical Engineering, CS, Robotics, Systems Design) or equivalent industry experience
We prefer:
- Experience working on safety-critical systems and products, e.g. autonomous vehicles, robotics, aerospace, automotive.
- Experience specifying reliability and performance of compute systems (ECUs, SoCs)
- Experience with embedded hardware architecture
- Expertise in state estimation theory and application (e.g. Kalman Filters, SLAM) and inertial navigation principles like IMU error characterization, calibration, etc.
- Experience using probability and statistics to evaluate risks and safety.
- Experience with analyzing very large datasets
The expected base salary range for this full-time position across US locations is listed below. Actual starting pay will be based on job-related factors, including exact work location, experience, relevant training and education, and skill level.
