About Range Energy

Range Energy builds powered trailers that help electrify heavy-duty trucking without requiring fleets to replace their tractors. We solve real-world problems with real hardware.

We move fast, take ownership, and hold a high bar for execution. We value people who are low ego and team-first, calm under pressure, direct and respectful communicators, willing to roll up their sleeves, and focused on solutions, not drama.

We operate with high integrity. We do what we say we’ll do, we’re transparent about risks and tradeoffs, and we build trust through consistent follow-through.

The work is hands-on. Sometimes messy. Often fast. Always meaningful.

Founded in 2021, Range is led by experienced EV operators from Tesla, Zoox, Honda, and other leading OEMs.

We are backed by strong investors and focused on building hardware that fleets will actually use.

If you like building real things, solving hard problems, and working with low drama, high output teammates, you will fit here.

Role Summary

We're looking for a Systems Engineer to own requirements management and traceability across our vehicle development programs. You'll be the connective tissue between hardware, firmware, and validation teams — ensuring that what we build maps cleanly to what we've specified, and that our development process supports ISO 26262 compliance at every stage. This role involves performing architectural trade studies, supporting supplier interactions, and having a broad technical impact on how our product performs in the real world, it is not just documentation and requirements.

This role sits at the intersection of systems thinking, functional safety, and EV powertrain expertise. You'll work hands-on with hardware and software teams while building the frameworks and processes that let us move fast without breaking traceability. If you're energized by structured problem-solving, enjoy open-ended problem solving, and want to shape how a growing hardware company develops a novel robotic platform, this is the role.

Key Responsibilities

    • Manage system and subsystem requirements, including decomposition, traceability, and change control across hardware, firmware, and validation domains.

    • Drive V-model development best practices, ensuring safety-critical features map clearly from system requirements to component specifications and verification plans.

    • Define and align critical system interfaces

    • Lead architectural trade studies and diagnostic strategy development using first-principles analysis and simulation (Python, or similar analysis scripting).

    • Manage ISO-26262 compliance, maintaining safety requirements and ASIL decompositions for high-voltage and propulsion systems. Manage 3rd party FuSa contractor engagements.

    • Translate stakeholder input into testable requirements and acceptance criteria through cross-functional collaboration.

    • Participate in hazard analysis, FMEA’s, and safety reviews; ensure findings are captured and that mitigations are implemented

    • Support supplier technical alignment by reviewing supplier requirements and interface specifications

What Success Looks Like (first 6–12 months)

    • Establish a requirements traceability framework, linking system-level requirements to component specs and test cases.

    • Complete ISO 26262 functional and technical safety concepts for key vehicle systems.

    • Serve as the internal expert for overall system behavior and go-to person for understanding the impact analysis of new software features or hardware changes

    • Optimize a core process for requirements management and safety analyses

Required Qualifications

    • 3–5 years of experience in systems engineering, requirements engineering, or a related role in automotive, robotics, aerospace, or heavy machinery industries

    • Hands-on experience with requirements management tools (DOORS, Polarion, Jama, or similar)

    • Working knowledge of V-model development processes and requirements traceability principles

    • Familiarity with ISO 26262 functional safety concepts, including hazard analysis, ASIL derivation, and safety requirements

    • Technical understanding of EV powertrain systems — high-voltage batteries, BMS concepts, inverters, charging, and/or thermal management

    • Experience performing first-principles based analysis and simulation (Python, or equivalent) to support trade studies and architectural decisions

    • Strong written communication skills; ability to author clear, testable requirements and drive cross-functional alignment

Preferred / Nice-to-Haves

    • Background in high-voltage battery systems, BMS development, or motor drive/inverter systems

    • Exposure to FMEA, FTA, or other structured safety analysis methods

    • Experience with end-to-end product development from concept to deployment

    • Familiarity with fail-operational and fault-tolerant system design

    • Knowledge of J1939 or other heavy-duty vehicle communication protocols

    • Experience working with third-party certification bodies or supporting functional safety audits

Other Requirements

  • This role requires regular onsite presence at Range HQ in Mountain View, CA

Range Energy’s compensation package includes a competitive salary, equity for all full-time roles, and a generous benefits package. The salary range for Mountain View, CA based applicants is between $168,000 - $240,000 annually. The salary band range indicated reflects early career, senior, and staff-level experience and final salary will be specific to a candidate’s experience level.
