At Opendoor our mission is to tilt the world in favor of homeowners and those who aim to become one. Homeownership matters. It's how people build wealth, stability, and community. It's how families put down roots, how neighborhoods strengthen, how the future gets built. We're building the modern system of homeownership giving people the freedom to buy and sell on their own terms. We’ve built an end-to-end online experience that has already helped thousands of people and we’re just getting started.

About the role

We're seeking an exceptional Tax Manager to join our Tax team. The ideal candidate brings deep technical tax, compliance and reporting expertise and a forward-looking mindset around AI-driven practice improvement. This role offers broad exposure to federal, state, and indirect tax — bringing sound technical judgment and the initiative to make the function faster and better than you found it.

What you'll do

Tax Reporting & Compliance

  • Lead end-to-end preparation and review of quarterly and annual income tax provisions, including current and deferred tax calculations, valuation allowance analysis, and preparation of related financial statement footnote disclosures
  • Oversee the preparation and review of federal and state income tax returns, estimates, and extensions for consolidated, combined, and standalone entities
  • Manage responses to federal and state audit inquiries and tax notices, including preparing supporting documentation and coordinating with internal and external stakeholders
  • Lead tax planning initiatives, research, and analysis to develop efficient, compliant tax strategies
  • Prepare or review tax-related journal entries, accruals, account reconciliations, and other month-end close activities
  • Monitor tax law changes and provide guidance to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
  • Maintain and enhance internal tax controls, recommending and implementing process improvements
  • Lead the R&D tax credit process, partnering with internal teams and external advisors to identify qualifying activities and ensure proper documentation
  • Draft technical memos and support materials to substantiate tax positions
  • Collaborate with the Tax Director and cross-functional teams on various tax initiatives and special projects across the business

AI-Driven Tax Practice

  • Reach for AI first — use Claude, Claude Code, and similar tools to accelerate research, draft technical memos, analyze notices, run calculations, and design repeatable workflows
  • Default to AI, don't defer to it. The tools give you leverage; the work is still yours. Every output you put your name on — whether it's a written position, a calculation, or a workflow result — is something you can explain and stand behind
  • Tax work is multi-layered — some steps demand deep judgment, others not as much. Map the difference. Automate what's mechanical, build structured workflows for what's in between, and protect your focus for the analysis and positions that actually require you

What you'll need

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting; CPA certification required
  • 5+ years of experience in corporate taxes, including both provision and compliance
  • Strong knowledge of federal, state tax laws as well as US GAAP
  • Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet tight deadlines
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to perform under pressure
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a collaborative approach to working with internal teams and external partners
  • High level of ethics, integrity, and professional judgment
  • You've rebuilt something because of AI and it runs faster now. When something new lands, you don't prompt and paste — you interrogate it, pressure-test it, and know exactly where it's wrong before anyone else does

Bonus points

  • Experience in Big 4 public accounting or a publicly traded company
  • Master's degree in Taxation, JD, or LLM with a focus in Tax
  • Proficiency in NetSuite or similar ERP systems

Location
This role is based in-person four days per week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday). Candidates must be based within commuting distance of our San Francisco office.
