Role Summary:
The Technical Engineer is a vital member of the vehicle development team, responsible for the setup, maintenance, and continuous enhancement of test benches and vehicles. Supporting the automated driving domain, this cross- functional role involves hands-on work with both hardware and software across various ECUs, HCPs, wiring harnesses, and electronics. The position demands technical acumen, organizational diligence, and collaboration with global teams, especially across multiple vehicle platforms and system variants.
Role Responsibilities:
- Assemble and configure test benches and vehicles by integrating ECUs, HCPs, displays, switches, and harnesses per schematics.
- Perform scheduled and ad-hoc software flashing and hardware updates on test modules and vehicles.
- Conduct functional verification via screen captures and trace logs; support debugging, root cause analysis, and bug-fix validation.
- Use simulation tools (e.g., clamp status simulators, rest bus emulation) to verify system behavior.
- Retrieve, deploy, and operate diagnostic and configuration tools; collect traces for analysis.
- Interpret wiring diagrams to install or modify custom harnesses, connectors, and components.
- Fabricate or adapt parts using various materials to resolve compatibility or availability issues.
- Maintain detailed records of activities, configurations, issues, and improvements to support traceability and continuous improvement.
- Manage inventory and coordinate logistics for parts, test resources, and prototype components, including shipments and certified disposal.
- Oversee garage operations, maintain tooling infrastructure, and manage vehicle scheduling.
- Coordinate vehicle logistics including insurance, registration, regulatory licensing, and legal compliance.
- Ensure vehicle safety pre/post-test; perform minor repairs and coordinate external maintenance.
- Administer documentation for compliance, end-of-life disposal, or international shipping procedures.
- Train and onboard new team members in tool usage, test procedures, and safety protocols.
- Collaborate cross-functionally and internationally (especially with teams in Germany) to ensure alignment and transparency.
- Maintain a valid prototype driver’s license and operate vehicles for data collection and testing.

- Fleet & Data Management: Expertise in managing test fleets and collecting data for software validation.
- Productivity Tools: Proficient with Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides) and related collaboration platforms.
Desired Skills:
- Familiarity with VW Group tools (e.g., ODIS-E, IDEX, CP-TOOLL, KVS, SYST42, KRYPTO42). · Experience in Android-based infotainment systems and OTA updates.
- Understanding of ISO 9001 and other development standards.
- Proficiency in Jira, Confluence, and Microsoft Office.
- Knowledge of automated driving systems and chassis retrofit systems.
- Familiarity with in-vehicle measurement systems and sensor technologies.
Workplace Flexibility:
- Available for early-morning meetings overlapping with German time zones.
- Occasional domestic and international travel for on-site support and workshops.
- Ability to lift and transport equipment or components as needed.
Years of Relevant Experience:
- 5+ years of experience in automotive engineering, including hands-on work with vehicle systems and coordination of test or development fleets in a technology-driven environment.
Required Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Computer Science, or a related field with 5+ years of experience, or a master’s degree with 3+ years of experience.
- California State driving license required.
Desired Education:
- Master’s degree or higher in electrical engineering, or related degree
Compensation
Salary range is dependent on factors such as geographical differentials, credentials or certifications, industry-based experience, qualification and training. In the city of Mountain View, California, the salary range for this position is $135,960 - 196,760.
