At Variance we are teaching machines to make the hardest judgement calls at scale. That means building AI agents for the high-precision gray-area of stopping fraud, scams, and abuse.
We’re a small, talent-dense team in San Francisco, tackling problems that touch billions of events and entities. Our customers include several Fortune 500s and global marketplaces and we're scaling to free millions of hours of human effort. If you thrive on extreme ownership, moving fast, and working directly with founders, you’ll feel at home here.
You’re a fit if you:
  • Care deeply about craftsmanship and have strong opinions about your work
  • After familiar with our tech stack: React/Next.js, Typescript, MySQL, and ClickHouse for agent context but we value strong fundamentals over any specific technology.
  • Thrive on owning features end-to-end, from backend to polished UI to production
  • Are thrilled by the prospect of building AI interfaces being used to literally save lives
What you’ll do
  • Ship features end-to-end with iteration cycles measured in hours, not quarters
  • Scale our product into new industries and workflows through fast pilots and live demos
  • Work directly with the founders on massive-scale, frontier problems
  • Design systems where AI must decide in real time, balancing precision, speed, and user trust.
Our culture
We believe in ownership, urgency, and craft. We enjoy spirited debate, wild ideas, and building things we're proud of. We're fully in-person in San Francisco.
What we offer
  • Competitive salary and meaningful equity
  • Health care: we offer platinum-level medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Unlimited PTO, sick leave, and parental leave
  • Up to $100 in reimbursement for personal health & wellness expenses each month
  • 401(k) plan

What you need to know about the San Francisco Tech Scene

San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area attracts more startup funding than any other region in the world. Home to Stanford University and UC Berkeley, leading VC firms and several of the world’s most valuable companies, the Bay Area is the place to go for anyone looking to make it big in the tech industry. That said, San Francisco has a lot to offer beyond technology thanks to a thriving art and music scene, excellent food and a short drive to several of the country’s most beautiful recreational areas.

Key Facts About San Francisco Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 365,500; 13.9% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Google, Apple, Salesforce, Meta
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, fintech, consumer technology, software
  • Funding Landscape: $50.5 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Greylock Partners, Khosla Ventures, Kleiner Perkins
  • Research Centers and Universities: Stanford University; University of California, Berkeley; University of San Francisco; Santa Clara University; Ames Research Center; Center for AI Safety; California Institute for Regenerative Medicine
