Job Description

I. Job Summary | Major goals and objectives.

PEOPLE digital is looking for a writer-reporter to join our night team, working from Monday to Friday. The ideal candidate will be an integral member of our editorial team, creating content on weekdays from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. PST. In addition to working closely with the Night Editor, this person will be a part of the overall news team and will be expected to occasionally pitch in during the off-hours.

 

PEOPLE as a brand covers 20+ different verticals, so this person needs to be comfortable writing everything from entertainment, royals and lifestyle content to crime, human interest and political stories. In the evening hours, there will be a heavy focus on those hard news topics.

 

This is a fast-paced newsroom, so speed is essential, and an ability to handle a volume of at least 5-7 stories a day, while still delivering everything clean, sharp, and accurate. This person must also be fluent in SEO and news trends.

 

The ideal candidate is an excellent writer and researcher, reporter and interviewer with sound news judgment and an enthusiastic team player. They will be expected to assist in developing sources and supporting long-term reporting initiatives. 

II. Essential Job Functions

60% - Writing stories on deadline across platforms

20% - Reporting stories and conducting interviews

10% - Pitching content

10% - Taking on and organizing special content projects as needed, and other duties as assigned

III. Minimum Qualifications and Job Requirements | All must be met to be considered.

Education:

BA/BS degree, preferably in journalism or communications, related field or equivalent training and/or experience.

Experience:

Minimum 2 years experience writing for a high volume, digital news operation.

Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a proven ability to work independently. 
  • Strong writing and research skills and impeccable journalistic standards. 
  • Ability to respond quickly to breaking news. 
  • Strong reporting and interviewing skills and the ability to cultivate new sources
  • Have a passion for the PEOPLE brand.

Pay Range

Salary: Remote: $68,000.00 - $68,000.00

The pay range above represents the anticipated low and high end of the pay range for this position and may change in the future. Actual pay may vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including but not limited to work location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of People Inc's total compensation package for employees.
