What is your role?

As the Art Director at Eleventh Hour Games, you will lead and define the artistic vision across all disciplines, including 2D, 3D, character, and environment art, while managing and mentoring the department leads under your umbrella. You’ll ensure visual excellence across the project and work cross-functionally with creative, technical, and production teams to deliver stunning and performant visuals.

This role is both strategic and tactical: you’ll shape artistic direction, uphold quality bars, and guide others in execution. You will oversee our Leads in Character Art, Environment Art, Animation, and Concept Art, while collaborating closely with Technical Art, Level Design, and VFX departments. You'll also help design efficient pipelines and workflows that support scalable, high-quality content production.

This is a fully remote role, best suited to someone who has strong visual instincts, excellent communication skills, and proven leadership in building high-performing art teams.

Responsibilities:

  • Define and own the visual direction of the game with studio leadership across all art departments
  • Lead a team of leads: 2D Art Lead, 3D Art Lead, Lead Animator, and Lead Environment Artist
  • Collaborate with the Creative Director and narrative/design leadership to ensure the art direction supports and elevates the broader vision
  • Partner with production to plan resourcing, scheduling, and prioritization of deliverables
  • Review major asset groups and features to ensure quality and consistency of visual style
  • Develop and document art guidelines and pipelines to support scalability and iteration
  • Identify staffing needs, participate in hiring, and mentor emerging leaders within the art team
  • Encourage healthy team culture, clear communication, and creative ownership among team members
  • Help ensure that the game’s visuals are both beautiful and performant
  • Collaborate with MTX, UI, VFX, and Animation to ensure art cohesion across gameplay, narrative, and monetization features
  • Participate in milestone reviews, giving clear, actionable feedback on art execution
  • Contribute hands-on when necessary to unblock teams or prototype new artistic directions

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience as an Art Director or equivalent senior leadership role in game development
  • Professional experience managing other managers, including art leads or discipline heads
  • Demonstrated ability to drive a unified artistic vision across multiple disciplines: 2D, 3D, character, and environment
  • Strong eye for visual quality with a portfolio that reflects a deep understanding of artistic fundamentals and game development constraints
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, especially in a remote team environment
  • Deep familiarity with game art pipelines, technical art integration, and collaboration across departments (design, engineering, etc.)
  • Experience with high-fidelity asset creation and optimization for real-time rendering

Pluses:

  • Familiarity with modern game engines and art workflows, without being engine-specific
  • Hands-on knowledge of tools such as Blender, Maya, ZBrush, Photoshop, and Substance Suite
  • Passion for top-down action RPGs within Last Epoch’s immediate competitive landscape and a strong understanding of what makes visuals shine in that genre
  • Experience shipping multiplayer online or co-op games
