Flex is a growth-stage, NYC headquartered FinTech company that is creating the best rent payment experience. It’s hard to believe that it’s 2026 and paying rent on time is expensive, inflexible, and difficult. We’re here to change that! Flex enables our users to pay rent throughout the month on a schedule that better fits their finances and budget. Our mission is to empower as many renters as possible with flexibility over their most significant recurring expense. After deliberately keeping a stealth profile as we built up unprecedented investor support and an enthusiastic user base, we are looking for motivated individuals to help us keep our mission growing. Will you be a part of the team?

About the role

As Associate General Counsel, you will be a key, early member of Flex’s growing Legal & Compliance team. Your primary mission will be to lead and own complex transactions that are critical to Flex’s business and develop solutions to scale Flex’s legal capabilities by leveraging training and technology. You’ll partner directly with the VP Legal and other senior stakeholders to provide pragmatic legal support to our cross-functional business partners, with a primary focus on transactions tied to Flex’s commercial structure, and occasional support on other corporate, product and business matters that come our way.  You’ll work closely with our Partnerships and Go-to-Market teams, and collaborate with our Product Counsel and Compliance teams to spot and escalate regulatory issues in new products and deal structures.

This rare opportunity is ideal for an entrepreneurial candidate, as you will be empowered to “think like an owner” and build materials and processes from the ground up, in collaboration with the VP Legal and business owners.  You will serve as a thought partner to the business, helping to build the frameworks, templates and playbooks that allow Flex to build and scale.

This is a hybrid position with on-site expectations of 3 days per week in one of our offices - New York, San Francisco or Salt Lake City. For candidates outside of those three areas, you may be eligible for our relocation assistance program.

What you’ll do
  • Negotiate and draft key strategic commercial agreements with financial and other partners, including high-impact revenue, distribution, partnership and payments-related deals, and support the broader commercial contracting function for complex or escalated deals
  • Build out and maintain playbooks, policies and frameworks and templates for Flex’s bank, partner and commercial transactions, including clear standards, fallback positions, and escalation paths.
  • Develop solutions to scale Flex’s legal capabilities by leveraging training and technology.
  • Collaborate with and provide strategic and legal advice to various cross-functional teams, including but not limited to sales, product, finance and partnerships.
  • Help build the foundation of a best-in-class legal team, including our in-house commercial function.
  • Keep the department and business apprised of new laws and regulations that could have an impact on the company’s commercial business, both regionally and nationally.
  • Voice your opinion and a drive for continuous improvement.
  • Close strategic deals by finding pragmatic solutions to any issue you encounter.
  • Adapt to change in a fast paced, dynamic environment.
Key qualifications
  • 7+ years of post-JD transactional experience, with a background that includes law firm and/or in-house roles.  Experience at a top firm is a strong plus, but not required.
  • Experience drafting and negotiating data privacy terms, including but not limited to, CCPA and GLBA contract terms.
  • Experience working with fintech, payments, or consumer credit businesses, such as bank-fintech partnerships, lending platforms, neobanks, or payments companies is a strong plus, but not required.
  • Demonstrated track record of leading complex transactions end-to-end with minimal supervision, including direct negotiation with banks, capital providers, or other strategic partners.
  • Ability to work out of one of our offices on a hybrid basis (3 days per week in office)
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build productive cross-functional relationships, and the ability to communicate directly and candidly in a culture that values clear feedback (and the occasional dry joke).
  • Low-ego and open to feedback, with a commitment to continually refining your judgment and approach
  • Persistence, drive and a goal-focused mindset as you own projects from initiation to completion.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to effectively prioritize tasks within a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • A bias for action, clear and concise communication skills, and a willingness to prioritize what truly matters.
  • JD from an accredited law school and member in good standing of a US state bar.
