About Thinking Machines

The mission of Thinking Machines is to build AI that extends human will and judgment. We are training frontier models with Inkling, developing Tinker to let people make models their own, and crafting interfaces that broaden human-AI communication. We believe the future worth building is human, and we're hiring people who want to build it.

About the Role

We’re looking for an experienced brand designer with strong visual judgment and the ability to build what they design. You’ll help shape how Thinking Machines shows up across our website, launches, publications, and physical objects, taking ideas from early exploration through to finished work. We value experimentation and a distinct point of view.

It’s an exciting time to join: we’re developing the Thinking Machines brand across a wide range of projects. Our design team is small, collaborative, and flat, with fluid boundaries between brand and product design. You’ll have the trust and autonomy to bring your own ideas, help decide what’s worth pursuing, and work closely with designers, engineers, and researchers to make it happen.

What You’ll Do
  • Develop visual ideas and evolve our brand through real projects, with care for typography, imagery, composition, and interaction.

  • Design, build, and improve our website, using code as part of your creative practice to explore ideas and create thoughtful digital experiences.

  • Make tools and reusable systems that expand what the team can create – from artwork generators to data-driven charts and publishing components.

  • Collaborate with illustrators, animators, and graphic designers, bringing their contributions into finished projects and helping with production where needed.

Skills & QualificationsMinimum Qualifications
  • A portfolio showing original ideas, strong visual design fundamentals, and care in execution across different formats.

  • The technical capability to build and ship digital work, with attention to accessibility, interaction details, and quality.

  • Initiative and clear communication – comfortable shaping an open brief, sharing work early, seeking feedback, and carrying a project through to completion.

Preferred Qualifications
  • An established agentic workflow, enthusiasm for new technology, and curiosity about making your own tools. You can direct, evaluate, and refine the work agents produce.

Logistics
  • Location: This role is based in New York, NY or San Francisco, CA

  • Compensation: Depending on background, skills and experience, the expected annual salary range for this position is $300,000 - $400,000 USD.

  • Visa sponsorship: We sponsor visas. While we can’t guarantee success for every candidate or role, if you’re the right fit, we’re committed to working through the visa process together.

  • Benefits: Thinking Machines offers generous health, dental, and vision benefits, unlimited PTO, paid parental leave, and relocation support as needed.
