Role Summary
Waterplan's Professional Services team is hiring a Climate Risk Consultant to support our growing climate risk and disclosure work. This is an internal advisory role: you will primarily consult directly with the PS team and with Waterplan’s Product team, helping us build climate risk indicators, scenario analysis, and disclosure-ready frameworks aligned with IFRS S1 & S2 and CSRD (ESRS) requirements. Direct client interaction is not the core of this role, though occasional involvement may be requested when needed.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and refine climate risk indicators and a climate risk framework covering both physical and transition risk
- Design physical and transition risk indicators using a hazard × exposure × vulnerability structure (the IPCC AR6 framing). This includes defining thresholds, normalization, scoring and classification logic, and how indicators aggregate from grid cell to asset, basin, and portfolio level
- Support the development of a solution covering scenario analysis aligned with IFRS S2 and ESRS methodologies. This includes selecting, processing, and validating climate projection datasets across emissions scenarios, time horizons, and baseline periods
- Write indicator specifications, data dictionaries, and methodology notes detailed enough for the Product and Engineering teams to implement, and auditable enough to support client disclosures under CSRD limited assurance
- Advise on the financial implications of climate scenarios (cost modeling, financial impact assessment) for client sectors such as manufacturing, technology, and textiles
- Help develop a climate change risk resilience and adaptation opportunities library tied to addressing identified potential risks
- Validate indicators against observed data and published benchmarks, run sensitivity analyses, and define how uncertainty and confidence are communicated to platform users
- Support preparation of climate-related disclosures aligned with CSRD (ESRS) and IFRS S2 requirements, including mapping which data points and metrics are required
- Track and interpret evolving ESRS/CSRD and IFRS regulatory guidance, flagging changes relevant to active projects
- Partner with the PS team to translate technical climate/disclosure requirements into internal frameworks and deliverables
- Support the team's CSRD requirements gap analysis and help define what's needed for a preliminary/dry-run and first-time disclosure exercises
- Ensure alignment with Waterplan's existing water risk indicators
- Provide internal training and knowledge-sharing so the broader PS team can speak to climate risk and disclosure topics
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Climate Science, Environmental Science, Sustainability, MSc/PhD in Climate or Atmospheric Science, Hydrology, Geosciences or a related field.
- 7+ years of senior-level experience in climate risk and resilience assessment, corporate sustainability, or climate disclosure consulting, ideally including experience leading or owning climate/CSRD-type engagements end-to-end
- Strong working knowledge of climate-related financial disclosure frameworks, including IFRS S2, with familiarity with CSRD/ESRS requirements
- Experience with physical and transition risk scenarios and data, such as the NGFS scenarios, IEA pathways, carbon price trajectories, and sector decarbonization pathways (SBTi, TPI).
- Understanding of how to translate climate scenarios into financial impact assessments
- Experience integrating climate risk into enterprise risk management or disclosure frameworks
- Strong data analysis skills and comfort working with evolving regulatory guidance
- Strong written communication skills; able to translate technical climate concepts into clear, internal-facing guidance
Preferred Qualifications
- Interest in software, technology, or digital transformation is a plus given this role supports a tech-enabled advisory platform; experience in any of these areas is an additional bonus
- Experience with double materiality assessments (CSRS/ESRS, TCFD/IFRS use financial materiality)
- Exposure to multi-country or multi-jurisdiction climate disclosure requirements
- Experience developing climate risk deliverables into a data/indicator model suitable for a software platform
Core Skill Set
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Self-directed, high-initiative, comfortable operating with ambiguous or evolving requirements
- Collaborative; able to work closely with a cross-functional, distributed team
- Ability to multi-task across concurrent workstreams and shifting priorities
- Able to work independently and deliver results with limited day-to-day oversight
- Proactive: flags gaps, risks, and open questions before they become blockers
