Content & Editorial Marketing Writer

The role

We're looking for a storyteller to own Flow's editorial voice. You'll decide what we publish, write it yourself, and ship it, from long-form essays and customer stories to launches and the newsletter.

Engineers are some of the most skeptical readers anywhere. Every software vendor promises faster, safer, better, and they've learned to tune it out. Your job is to write things they trust: specific, true and worth their time.

Hardware engineering is going through its biggest change in decades, and almost nobody is writing about it well. You'll interview the engineers building rockets, EVs and fusion reactors, work directly with our CEO, and turn what they know into writing the industry seeks out and shares. What you write will shape how the hardware world understands Flow.

What you'll do
  • Own the editorial calendar: Decide what Flow publishes, when and why.

  • Set the bar: Define Flow's editorial voice and style, and keep every piece clear, specific and accurate.

  • Write the big pieces: Essays, guides and original perspectives on how hardware gets built, from requirements and verification to AI in engineering.

  • Find stories in the field: Interview engineers at orgs like Rivian, Stoke Space, NASA; visit test sites and factories, and turn what you find into customer stories people want to read.

  • Build signature formats: Create recurring series that readers come to expect from Flow, like customer field stories, technical explainers or a must-read newsletter.

  • Write for launches: Draft announcements, blog posts and product pages for new Flow releases.

  • Write with our leaders: Help our CEO and engineers publish bylines, LinkedIn posts and talks in their own voice.

  • Grow our audience: Use search and AI-answer visibility (SEO and GEO) to shape what you write from the start, not as a cleanup pass at the end.

  • Use AI well: Build a writing workflow where AI tools speed up research and drafting without lowering the bar.

  • Measure what works: Track traffic, engagement and pipeline influence, and use what you learn to decide what to write next.

What success looks like
  • In 3 months: You know our customers and product well enough to write about them with authority, and you've shipped your first customer story and long-form piece.

  • In 6 months: You've launched a signature series, made the newsletter something engineers look forward to, and set a steady publishing cadence.

  • In 12 months: Flow is the company hardware engineers read to understand where their industry is going.

What we're looking for
  • You have taste. You can't walk past a vague sentence or a case study that says nothing. You know the difference between content that's technically correct and content that's worth reading.

  • You're a proven writer. You have [6+] years of professional writing experience in content marketing, journalism, editorial or a similar field, and a body of published work you wrote yourself, including long-form pieces you're proud of.

  • You make hard things clear. You can explain complex technical topics without flattening them or falling back on generic tech-marketing language. You can tell when a technical claim is load-bearing and when it's decoration.

  • You're deeply curious. You learn unfamiliar subjects fast, ask sharp questions, and earn credibility with engineers and executives alike.

  • You have a point of view on AI. You've written with AI tools yourself, you know what to trust them with, and you have opinions about where they break down.

  • You'd rather write than manage. You enjoy doing the work and shipping it yourself.

  • You run your own show. You pitch ideas, juggle several pieces at once, and publish consistently without being chased.

  • You're low-ego and collaborative. You take feedback well and make the people around you sound better.

Nice to have
  • Experience writing for engineers or technical audiences, especially in aerospace, automotive, energy, defense or developer tools.

  • An engineering or science background, or time spent covering hardware as a journalist.

  • Experience at an early-stage B2B startup.

  • A track record of growing organic search and AI-answer visibility for a technical brand.

San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area attracts more startup funding than any other region in the world. Home to Stanford University and UC Berkeley, leading VC firms and several of the world’s most valuable companies, the Bay Area is the place to go for anyone looking to make it big in the tech industry. That said, San Francisco has a lot to offer beyond technology thanks to a thriving art and music scene, excellent food and a short drive to several of the country’s most beautiful recreational areas.

Key Facts About San Francisco Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 365,500; 13.9% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Google, Apple, Salesforce, Meta
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, fintech, consumer technology, software
  • Funding Landscape: $50.5 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Greylock Partners, Khosla Ventures, Kleiner Perkins
  • Research Centers and Universities: Stanford University; University of California, Berkeley; University of San Francisco; Santa Clara University; Ames Research Center; Center for AI Safety; California Institute for Regenerative Medicine
