We are seeking a Controller to lead accounting for a growing, private equity backed distribution business. This newly created role reports to the CFO and owns the monthly close, technical accounting, financial controls, and relationships with auditors, tax advisors, and banking partners.
The Controller will improve the speed and accuracy of reporting, strengthen cash forecasting and working capital management, and help build an accounting function that can scale with the business.
The role currently leads one direct report and oversees an outsourced accounting team.
Responsibilities
- Own and improve the monthly close, reconciliations, general ledger accuracy, and financial reporting.
- Lead technical accounting for revenue recognition, inventory, landed costs, accruals, and leases.
- Manage audit, tax, and banking relationships, including multi-state compliance and related filings.
- Maintain cash forecasts and report on net working capital.
- Build internal controls and improve accounting processes through the ERP system, dashboards, and automation.
- Develop the accounting team and oversee the performance of the outsourced accounting provider.
- Partner with operations and sales leaders to incorporate controls into day-to-day work.
- Lead accounting process integration and support consistent reporting across entities.
- Work with the CFO on financial priorities and prepare reporting for senior leadership, the board, and investors.
Qualifications
- 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including independent ownership of the close and technical accounting in a mid-sized business.
- Experience managing audits, tax matters, banking relationships, cash forecasts, and working capital.
- Hands-on ERP experience and a record of improving processes through technology. Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central experience is preferred.
- Experience building internal controls and leading both employees and outsourced accounting partners.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work across finance, operations, and sales.
- An undergraduate degree in accounting; CPA strongly preferred.
- Experience with multi-state compliance, distribution, consumer products, or business integration is a plus.
