Position Summary:
The Director of Business Development, Power Solutions, will be responsible for the Hyperscaler and Data Center Owner/Operator relationships. As these organizations race towards building gigawatt-scale data centers, this technically-oriented business leader will help solve for challenges in grid availability, power quality, energy resilience and offer/negotiate use of bankable and reliable Canadian Solar critical power infrastructure products — led by battery energy storage (BESS) deployed behind the meter to solve data center power quality challenges (AI training load smoothing, large electronic load ride-through, and load shifting) and to anchor off-grid and blackstart microgrids, complemented by natural gas generation, power conversion, and controls, and delivered as integrated, turnkey solutions — that will allow these cloud providers to scale. We are seeking a candidate with technical fluency in the data center energy value chain. In this role, you will lead commercial engagements with Tier 1 Hyperscalers (AWS, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Oracle), understanding their complex power system requirements that can be served by our power solution offering (selling our reliability, efficiency, power quality and speed-to-market capabilities). You will engage directly with Data Center Architects, Electrical Engineers, Procurement Leaders, and Infrastructure Owner/Operators to structure deals that solve their most pressing data center power challenges.
Responsibilities:
- Hyperscale Account Strategy: Map the decision-making matrix within Hyperscale organizations, connecting with stakeholders in Energy Procurement, Site Selection, and Critical Infrastructure Engineering.
- Solution Structuring: Orchestrate complex deals that may involve multiple technologies, including battery storage (BESS) for behind-the-meter power quality and microgrid applications, natural gas generation (turbine and reciprocating gensets, including mobile/bridge units), and power conversion, ensuring they meet strict SLA and grid interconnection requirements.
- Behind-the-Meter & Microgrid Solutions: Develop and structure BESS-led behind-the-meter and off-grid solutions — AI training load smoothing, large electronic load ride-through, load shifting, and blackstart/islanded microgrids, paired with natural gas generation where required — that bring data center capacity online ahead of, or independent of, utility interconnection.
- Technology Partner & Supply Chain Engagement: Leverage and expand relationships across the power solutions supply chain — BESS and power-conversion OEMs, controls providers, and, where required, natural gas generation OEMs/packagers and rental providers — to assemble competitive, deliverable solutions and manage equipment lead times.
- Technical Consultative Selling: Participate in high-level technical sales engagements. You are expected to white-board basic power architectures with customer engineering teams, demonstrating how our solutions can ensure uptime for these critical sites.
- Market Feedback Loop: Act as the bridge between the customer’s technical roadmap (e.g., higher rack densities, liquid cooling power needs) and our product engineering teams. Collect and understand customer needs, market trends and input from across organizational leadership to align product strategy and roadmap across the power solutions portfolio (storage, power conversion, and generation).
Requirements:
- Industry Experience: 10+ years of technical sales &/or business development experience in the Critical Infrastructure or Energy sector.
- BESS Expertise: Demonstrated commercial experience selling, structuring, or managing integrated battery energy storage solutions. This may be satisfied by BESS experience in any segment, including utility-scale and front-of-meter projects. The ideal profile adds experience in behind-the-meter, data center, or microgrid applications and candidates with that background will be weighted accordingly, though it is not required.
- Domain Expertise: Strong functional knowledge of the data center power stack. Experience selling or managing any of the following assets:
- Power Generation (gas turbines, reciprocating engine gensets, fuel cells, or renewables)
- Power Conversion Devices (inverters, rectifiers, transformers, including DC distribution architectures such as OCP ±400Vdc and 800Vdc)
- Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) technologies
- SCADA / Controls & Cybersecurity (OT Security standards)
- Natural Gas Generation (Nice to Have): Commercial familiarity with natural gas generation (turbine or reciprocating gensets, including mobile/bridge units), for example through OEM/packager sales, temporary or bridge power, IPP development, or EPC is a plus but is not required.
- The "Hunter" Mindset: Proven track record of closing complex, multi-million-dollar infrastructure deals with Hyperscalers, large Co-location providers, or EPCs.
- Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in electrical or mechanical engineering is highly preferred.
- Grid Fluency: Understanding of utility interconnection challenges, behind-the-meter and off-grid/islanded microgrid architectures (including blackstart and BESS-led hybrid operation with natural gas generation), and the regulatory landscape for distributed and bridge power.
- Confident with decision making regarding determining product guidelines, purpose, following through and completion.
- High level of critical and logical thinking, analysis, and/or reasoning to identify underlying principles, reasons, or facts.
- Excellent interpersonal relations and demonstrated ability to work with others effectively in teams.
- Self-motivated and able to work independently and proactively with minimal supervision.
- Excellent organizational, strategic, planning and implementing skills.
- Ability to travel as required – expected travel requirement approximately 30-50%.
Compensation and Benefits:
Canadian Solar offers a competitive salary plus fully comprehensive benefits and performance bonus package based on an annual objective achievement. Our generous benefits package includes a 401(k) Retirement Plan, medical/dental/life/disability program, PTO and sick days. This is a full time position.
