The Position

Genentech is seeking a transformational Director, Occupational Hygiene to drive occupational hygiene excellence across a world-class pharmaceutical campus.  Reporting directly to the Executive Director, Security, Safety, Health and Environment (SSHE), this pivotal leadership position will be responsible for providing strategic leadership and comprehensive oversight of occupational hygiene programs across the Genentech South San Francisco campus and leading a team of occupational hygiene professionals. Serve as the primary occupational hygiene advisor to site senior and executive leadership, acting as the key internal and external representative for the organization.

The Opportunity

The Director, Occupational Hygiene will play a critical role in anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling workplace hazards to ensure a world-class safe work environment and maintain compliance with local, state, federal, and Roche Corporate Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) requirements.  As a member of the SSHE leadership team, you’ll partner with the Executive Director and team to develop and implement multi-year strategies to proactively protect people, identify and reduce risk, and enhance the overall safety culture. To excel in this position, the ideal candidate will possess 12+ years of progressive experience and a unique blend of strong technical expertise, exceptional leadership skills, and strategic agility.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive oversight and strategic leadership for all campus occupational hygiene programs encompassing industrial hygiene, biosafety, radiation safety, and chemical safety.

  • Ensure full compliance with local, state, and federal regulations while identifying control strategies and leading root-cause analysis for physical safety incidents. 

  • Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing team of occupational hygiene professionals, dedicating significant time to staffing and operational excellence 

  • Align site-specific safety objectives with global Roche sustainability policies, ensuring effective adaptation to evolving site operations. 

  • Serve as the principal occupational hygiene advisor to site senior leadership, translating complex organizational strategies into actionable business goals. 

  • Cultivate collaborative relationships with cross-functional business partners.  Participate on divisional, global, or corporate teams representing the business area’s interests.and serve as the key lead for regulatory inspections.

  • Architect and implement comprehensive long-term occupational hygiene strategies and robust contingency frameworks to proactively mitigate operational risks.

Who You Are

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering, physical science, life science, engineering, occupational safety, or a related field.

  • 12+ years of progressive, relevant work experience in Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) roles within site and/or corporate functions.  Extensive experience and solid working knowledge of industrial hygiene monitoring methods and hazard control within the biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry highly preferred.

  • Exceptional leadership; experience successfully leading occupational hygiene teams preferred

  • Deep working knowledge and experience occupational hygiene programs, including chemical safety, industrial hygiene, biosafety, and radiation safety to provide technical guidance and mentorship to staff members.

  • Demonstrated working knowledge and understanding of state (Cal/OSHA, CDPH), federal (OSHA), NIOSH, and ACGIH regulations and consensus standards applicable to GMP and non-GMP environment

  • Professional certification as a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) is highly preferred.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to successfully negotiate with regulatory agencies and senior operations leaders.

  • This position is based in South San Francisco, CA campus

  • Relocation assistance is not available at this time.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco, CA is $169,600.00 - $315,000.00 USD. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.  A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance.  This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
