About Ditto:

Ditto is redefining how data moves at the edge. Our mission is to make it seamless for developers to build resilient, real-time applications, regardless of network conditions. Whether you're in a stadium, airplane, or remote military base, Ditto's peer-to-peer sync engine ensures devices stay connected and data stays consistent, even without internet. With more than $145 million in funding and trusted by organizations like Chick-fil-A, Delta Airlines, and the U.S. military, Ditto powers mission-critical experiences across aviation, retail, travel, hospitality, defense, and more. As a globally distributed, fast-growing startup, we’re committed to building a diverse and inclusive team that reflects the wide range of perspectives needed to solve the world’s hardest connectivity problems.

Ditto is at an inflection point. We're hitting a massive scaling phase, and we need an exceptional engineering leader to help build our cloud product and support this hyper-growth journey. This is a unique opportunity to join a company at the beginning of its rapid expansion and shape the future of our technical foundation.

As Engineering Manager on our Cloud team, you will lead a team building cloud databases, data integrations technologies (HTTP APIs, Kafka streams), CDC (change data capture) pipelines, and connectors to other database systems. You'll be responsible for converting product vision into engineering reality and translating customer needs into highly resilient and scalable cloud-native designs. You'll work closely with our Infrastructure group (Platform, Performance and Release Engineering, and SRE teams) and report to the Senior Director of Engineering - Cloud. Your mission will be to build a world-class database product supported by an operational mindset in support of Ditto's ambitious growth plans.

Unlike many cloud roles, this position places you at the intersection of cloud-native reliability and cutting-edge distributed database technologies (like CRDTs), powering real-time data sync across edge devices and the cloud.

What You'll Be Up To…

Lead and Develop Your Team:

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of 8-10 skilled and globally distributed engineers, supporting their technical success, career development, and personal growth

  • Provide mentorship and coaching to help team members achieve their full potential

  • Foster a culture of trust, collaboration, and continual improvement aligned with Ditto's core values

Drive Technical Excellence:

  • Plan and deliver high-quality solutions that meet business and technical goals

  • Be an active participant in the design and implementation of system architectures, focusing on scalability and reliability

  • Drive optimizations for high-throughput, low-latency distributed databases, ensuring robust data consistency and fault tolerance.

  • Establish monitoring and alerting strategies to ensure 99.99% reliability at scale

Shape Product Direction:

  • Collaborate with Product, the Senior Director of Engineering - Cloud, and other Engineering teams to align database capabilities with business needs

  • Shape the team's roadmap, incorporating input from customers, engineers, and researchers

  • Play a key role in evolving Ditto's engineering culture to prioritize reliability and resilience in our mission-critical software

Ensure Operational Excellence:

  • Support software operations by ensuring the reliability, performance, and availability of systems in production environments in partnership with our SRE team

  • Strengthen the bond between the database product team and our SRE and Platform teams

  • Build with cost efficiency in mind

What Helps You Thrive…
  • Management Experience: 3+ years managing software engineering teams, including responsibilities like hiring, performance management, and career development

  • Technical Expertise: 5+ years of technical leadership experience with a strong background in platform and database technologies, distributed systems, and cloud-native architectures

  • Deep Database Systems Knowledge: Experience designing, maintaining, and optimizing high-performance storage engines (such as RocksDB or similar), indexing strategies, and replication mechanisms

  • Cloud Experience: Strong experience with AWS (required). Experience with GCP and Azure is highly desired

  • Kubernetes Experience: 2+ years of experience with Kubernetes in production environments

  • Platform and Database Product Expertise: Demonstrated experience delivering platform or infrastructure products and benchmarking, debugging, and optimizing distributed systems effectively

  • Collaborative Leadership: Proven ability to manage remote, globally distributed teams with strong asynchronous communication skills. Exceptional written and verbal communication to effectively convey complex ideas and align team efforts

  • Proactive Leadership: A high level of self-direction, autonomy, and responsibility in leading teams and driving projects forward

Great-to-Haves…
  • Experience with database internals or in database product teams

  • Knowledge of technologies like Kafka and experience managing cloud database applications

  • Understanding of CRDTs and their practical applications

  • Previous experience leading teams working with Rust as the primary programming language

  • Experience with multi-region and multi-cloud architectures

  • Background in edge computing, peer-to-peer systems, or distributed database technologies

  • Previous experience working with enterprise customers with high reliability requirements

The Benefits of Building with Us

We offer competitive salaries and meaningful equity. We believe everyone on the team should have a stake in what we’re building.
