About the role:

We're seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to serve as a key operational leader within our engineering organization. Reporting directly to the VP of Engineering, you'll be responsible for managing day-to-day development operations across multiple teams, ensuring smooth execution while maintaining technical excellence and team health.

What you'll do:

You'll be the operational backbone of our engineering organization, translating strategic vision into tactical execution. Your primary focus will be facilitating cross-team collaboration, removing blockers, and ensuring our engineering teams have everything they need to ship high-quality software efficiently. You'll manage the rhythm of development (sprint planning, standups, retrospectives, and delivery) while keeping a pulse on team morale and individual growth.

When complex technical decisions arise that require executive input or cross-functional alignment, you'll synthesize the context and elevate them appropriately to the VP of Engineering. You'll balance tactical execution with strategic thinking, knowing when to make decisions independently and when to escalate.

What CRIO is looking for:

Experience: 5+ years in software engineering with 2+ years in engineering management, preferably managing multiple teams or a significant engineering function.

Technical Credibility: Strong technical background with the ability to engage in architectural discussions, review technical proposals, and earn the respect of senior engineers, even if you're not writing code daily.

Operational Excellence: Proven track record of establishing and improving development processes, managing delivery across teams, and creating systems that scale as organizations grow.

People Leadership: Demonstrated success building and developing teams, with strong coaching and mentoring skills and a genuine investment in helping engineers grow their careers.

Decision-Making: Sound judgment about when to make decisions independently versus when to escalate, with clear communication about tradeoffs and implications.

Communication Skills: Excellent at distilling complex technical topics for diverse audiences and facilitating productive discussions across teams and functions.

Job Requirements:

Operational Leadership: Own the day-to-day operations of multiple engineering teams, ensuring consistent processes, clear priorities, and efficient delivery cycles across the organization. Identify bottlenecks, inefficiencies, and opportunities to streamline - whether that's in our tooling, processes, team structures, or communication patterns. Champion experiments with new methodologies and be willing to abandon practices that no longer serve us.

Planning & Delivery: Lead quarterly planning processes to align engineering efforts with business objectives, translating strategic priorities into actionable team roadmaps. Facilitate sprint planning across teams to ensure clear goals, realistic commitments, and balanced workloads.

Performance Management: Conduct regular performance reviews, providing clear and actionable feedback that drives individual growth. Set meaningful goals, track progress, and hold team members accountable while supporting their professional development.

Team Development: Build and mentor high-performing teams through thoughtful hiring, career development, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

Cross-Team Coordination: Facilitate collaboration between teams, manage dependencies, and ensure alignment on priorities and technical approaches across the engineering organization.

Technical Oversight: Maintain a strong technical pulse across teams, reviewing architectural decisions, code quality standards, and technical debt management while escalating strategic technical decisions to the VP of Engineering. Champion engineering excellence by establishing and evolving standards for code quality, testing, documentation, and architectural patterns. Create feedback loops that help teams learn from incidents and improve continuously.

Stakeholder Communication: Partner with product, design, and other departments to ensure engineering priorities align with business needs and communicate progress transparently.

Metrics & Continuous Improvement: Establish and track meaningful engineering metrics (cycle time, deployment frequency, change failure rate, etc.) that illuminate how we're performing and where we can improve. Use data to identify trends, validate improvement initiatives, and make the case for changes.

Location & Travel:

This position is fully remote. You can work anywhere in the US with the expectation of being available based on EST time zone.

Benefits & Perks:

  • Work from anywhere
  • Unlimited PTO
  • 401k company match
  • Healthcare
  • Dental
  • Vision (Company Paid 100%)
  • Life insurance
  • Professional development
  • Work From Home Expense Reimbursement

All employment decisions are made based on qualifications, merit, and business need without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, veteran status, disability status, age, or any other basis protected by federal, state, or local law.
