Engineering Manager (Remote)

Full-Time, Remote / Salary, Exempt / Includes Benefits, PTO, Flexible Schedule, Equity

At Steno, we’re growing fast and transforming the litigation technology industry with best-in-class court reporting, modern solutions that add value for lawyers, and an exceptional client experience. We partner with law firms to simplify complex workflows, deliver reliable outcomes and case insights, and to revolutionize a traditionally outdated space while we expand across the country.

Steno has experienced rapid growth and market adoption since its release in early 2019, and we are now ready to bring on additional engineering talent to help us build intelligent systems that meet our customers' evolving needs.

Who are you?

An amazing, AI-powered product begins with amazing people who are ready to upend a traditional industry. As a technical manager on a growing team, you will be instrumental in leading and developing a team of engineers while ensuring high technical standards and alignment with business objectives.

If you're passionate about leadership and technical excellence with strong software engineering and SDLC fundamentals, and an enthusiasm for our engineering culture of continuous improvement - come join us!

On a regular basis, you'll be:

  • Participating in technical discussions and reviews to maintain high technical standards
  • Collaborating with other departments on cross-functional initiatives
  • Managing resource allocations and project planning
  • Providing technical guidance and mentorship to direct reports
  • Engaging in recruitment and interviewing processes to grow the team
  • Help triage, investigate root causes, and support critical system issues as they arise
  • Conducting regular one-on-ones with direct reports for performance monitoring and mentorship
  • Championing and continuously improving Steno's SDLC process
  • Facilitating communication regarding engineering-related compliance activities (SOC2, Penetration Testing, etc.)
  • Reviewing, managing, and approving employee expense submissions

You're gonna crush it if:

  • You possess a track record of developing talented software teams
  • You have experience with multiple software project methodologies (Scrum, Kanban, etc.)
  • You understand compliance and security considerations in software development
  • You have experience in adapting processes and procedures in response to changing team and business needs
  • You're passionate about revolutionizing traditional industries through technology

This job may not be for you if:

  • You’d prefer not to “roll up your sleeves” when it comes to getting technical and solving problems
  • You're uncomfortable with ambiguity and changing priorities in response to business needs
  • You prefer working in highly structured, process-heavy environments
  • You're not interested in contributing to recruitment and team-building efforts

Some Requirements:

  • 5+ years of software development experience: you have a strong technical background with broad knowledge of software development
  • 2+ years of engineering management experience: you've managed and coached direct reports for growth and success in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication skills, both technical and non-technical
  • Ability to balance technical considerations with business objectives
  • Experience with software development lifecycles and best practices
  • Problem-solving skills and ability to manage complex projects
  • Excellent leadership and mentoring skills
  • Contribution to maintaining Steno’s compliance certifications and managing security standards
  • Be comfortable leading team meetings and facilitating discussions

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary -   $190,000 - $230,000 plus a yearly discretionary bonus based on goals set by your manager
  • Premium Medical, Dental, & Vision Coverage - options for you and your family, with 100% of premiums covered for some plans - well above industry benchmarks.
  • Wellness/Mental Health - shared benefits to be used among employees and families
  • Flexible Paid Time Off - allowing employees to find balance in their lives
  • Stock options included. When Steno grows, you grow.
  • Access to a 401k through Guideline
  • A home office setup and a monthly stipend to offset internet and phone costs
