Who We Are

At Inclined, we're building the technology that lets people borrow against their life insurance — unlocking the roughly $1 trillion in value currently trapped inside whole life policies. In practice, that means moving a lot of money safely, building the systems that manage the collateral behind it, and automating processes that have been slow and manual for decades. We're a well-funded startup founded by industry veterans from finance, software, and life insurance, including the co-founder of Strava and Guidewire.

About the Role

As a full-stack engineer, you'll work across a wide surface area — the consumer product people use to borrow against their policies, the underwriting and loan systems behind it, and the internal tools our sales and operations teams rely on every day. The hard part is product complexity: we serve very different users, and support many types of loans, each with its own rules, requirements, and edge cases. The core of the work is turning that complexity into clean, extensible code — and an experience that feels simple and reliable for the people using it. You'll do it as part of a small team that plans, builds, and ships together rather than working in isolation.

We've built a strong engineering culture and the processes to match — but we're still small enough that how the team works is very much open to your influence. Our size lets us move quickly on new tools and ways of working, and we're always experimenting with how we build. You'll also get visibility into the wider business, and work closely with product and design to deliver internal tools for our sales and operations teams.

We're a distributed, remote-first team. We value teammates who are committed to working collaboratively, and we support each other through asynchronous communication via Slack and regular synchronous developer chats. We respect the work-life balance of our teammates, and — because we work across time zones — we value engineers who can progress independently.

Everyone Leads

One aspect of engineering at Inclined is that every engineer rotates through being a project lead, starting with smaller features and moving on to larger ones. In addition to implementation, the project lead is responsible for overseeing a project — defining its scope, coordinating the team's tasks, and monitoring and communicating progress. The role requires partnering with product and design and other internal and external stakeholders to gather deep domain knowledge in order to best plan a course of action. Recent project lead work includes:

  • Automating our underwriting engine end-to-end

  • Expanding eligibility to support policies across multiple insurance carriers

  • Launching our native iOS and Android apps

  • Redesigning our origination document framework so new document types are easy to support

What You'll Bring
  • A track record of shipping and owning production code — you've taken features from concept through launch, not just contributed to them (our mid-level engineers own projects, and we care more about demonstrated ownership than a specific year count; ~4+ years of experience is a useful anchor)

  • A generalist mindset — comfortable working across the full stack

  • A knack for driving simple, effective solutions to loosely-defined problems

  • Self-motivation and comfort working with ambiguity in a remote setting

  • Detail-orientation — you operate well in a high-detail environment where accuracy matters

  • A collaborative, ego-less approach: open-minded, flexible, communicative, and user-minded

  • A thoughtful posture toward AI: you use it across your workflows, understand its limitations, and leverage people effectively in the loop

Nice to Haves
  • FinTech or other regulated-industry experience

  • Experience with a product that moves money

  • Familiarity with our tech stack (Typescript, Next, React, GraphQL, Node, Prisma, AWS, Terraform, Docker, DBT)

Location

This role is fully remote within the US. We're a distributed team and support each other across time zones.

Benefits of working at Inclined
  • Competitive salary and equity package

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, vision and life insurance benefits

  • Generous vacation and holidays

  • Remote-first culture

  • A seasoned team to build with

  • Regular team onsites to connect in person — recent trips have taken us to Truckee, Austin, and Minneapolis.

What you need to know about the San Francisco Tech Scene

San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area attracts more startup funding than any other region in the world. Home to Stanford University and UC Berkeley, leading VC firms and several of the world’s most valuable companies, the Bay Area is the place to go for anyone looking to make it big in the tech industry. That said, San Francisco has a lot to offer beyond technology thanks to a thriving art and music scene, excellent food and a short drive to several of the country’s most beautiful recreational areas.

Key Facts About San Francisco Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 365,500; 13.9% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Google, Apple, Salesforce, Meta
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, fintech, consumer technology, software
  • Funding Landscape: $50.5 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Greylock Partners, Khosla Ventures, Kleiner Perkins
  • Research Centers and Universities: Stanford University; University of California, Berkeley; University of San Francisco; Santa Clara University; Ames Research Center; Center for AI Safety; California Institute for Regenerative Medicine
