JOB DESCRIPTION
The full-stack software engineering role will be contributing towards accelerating the automation and digitization efforts of the laboratory operation for UL Solutions. The candidate will be a part of a multidisciplinary team of software engineers, data scientists, architects, and other engineers working toward developing digital tools and automation solutions for the lab. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of developing web applications and contributing towards enterprise digitization efforts. In this role, you will collaborate closely with users, product teams, technology teams, and management. This position requires a proactive and innovative approach to problem-solving and a commitment to continuous improvement. Our primary technology stack uses JavaScript/TypeScript and Python hosted in Azure.
This is a remote based role and can be located in either Italy or Poland.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • As a full-stack software engineer, you will be a part of a multidisciplinary team of software engineers, data scientists, architects, and other engineers in working toward developing software solutions for the lab.
  • The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of developing delivering software solutions, features, and remediating issues.
  • The ideal candidate will is experienced in working closely with a focused user base, empathizing with users, understanding users workflows, and delivering on user feedback.
  • Develops and modifies information system programs.
  • Supports the implementation of moderately complex requirements for multiple platforms, operating systems, and applications.
  • Assists problem resolution by devising or modifying procedures.
  • Considers equipment capacity and limitations, operating time, and form of desired results when developing resolutions.
  • Supports the identification of system requirements by interviewing users, interviewing and selecting vendors (if applicable), analyzing applications, evaluating existing and proposed systems, and recommending solutions.
  • Analyzes and isolates application issues and performs problem resolution.
  • Monitors progress of software-based projects by tracking activity, resolving problems, publishing progress reports, and recommending actions.
  • Improves systems performance by investigating problems, developing specifications, identifying trends in technology, and recommending solutions.
  • Works as part of a team.
  • Read and follow the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct and follow all physical and digital security practices.
  • Performs other duties as directed.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience working with modern JavaScript frameworks such as Vue.js, React.js, Angular, or similar.
  • 3+ years of backend web development experience using frameworks like Django, Flask, FastAPI, or equivalent.
  • Proven experience collaborating with cross-functional teams in a dynamic environment.
  • This position requires approximately 10% travel.
  • Candidates must be able to travel internationally (with a valid passport) for team meetings, training sessions, and project work as needed.

Nice-to-Haves:
  • Hands-on experience in an electrical lab is highly beneficial. Backgrounds in electrical engineering, familiarity with bench-top test equipment, soldering, and breadboarding are all strong assets.
  • Proficiency with version control systems, particularly Git and GitHub.
  • Comfortable working with TypeScript.
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as Azure or AWS, as well as containerization technologies like Docker and related tooling.
  • Strong command of Linux environments, including writing and debugging shell/bash scripts.
  • Familiarity with software project management tools such as Azure DevOps or Jira.

Total Rewards: We understand that rewards are an important consideration as you plan the next step in your career. Salary range varies by location and local market conditions - for Poland the annual salary range for this position starts from 175,300 PLN gross - and is based on multiple factors, including job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, and other factors. This position is eligible for additional incentive with a target payout of 10% of base salary.
