Purpose of Role

Responsible for leading and overseeing all strategic communications, media relations, and public affairs initiatives to enhance the organization's brand, protect its reputation, and influence public perception and policy. Aligns messaging across internal and external stakeholders to support business objectives and foster public trust. Must have demonstrable track record of utilizing strategic communications to drive attributable business results, including national earned media, high impact thought leadership campaigns, and measurable reputation gains.

Key Responsibilities

  • Partners with CMO and senior leadership to develop business goals and KPIs for communications and corporate affairs.
  • Develops and executes a roadmap of integrated communication strategies using cross-functional collaboration and data-driven insights to meet those business goals.
  • Oversees all external communications using media relations, digital platforms, and public relations tactics to shape favorable public perception and trust.
  • Leads crisis communication planning and response using risk assessment tools to mitigate reputational threats and ensure timely, transparent messaging.
  • Builds and manages relationships with media, policymakers, community leaders, and industry stakeholders using targeted outreach and strategic messaging to influence policy and public sentiment.
  • Advises executive leadership using strategic counsel and stakeholder insights to inform decision-making and support thought leadership initiatives.
  • Oversees government affairs and advocacy efforts using regulatory knowledge and coalition-building to support favorable legislative and regulatory outcomes.
  • Manages brand positioning and corporate identity initiatives using market research and stakeholder feedback to ensure consistent and impactful brand presence across channels.
  • Monitors communication effectiveness using analytics and KPIs to refine strategies and demonstrate impact.
  • Ensures transparent, timely, and strategically aligned messaging during periods of heightened visibility or scrutiny.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Deliverables/Expectations for the first 12 months in position

  • Delivers 3–5 high-quality earned media placements per quarter for the President (e.g., top-tier business, financial, policy, or national news outlets).
  • Produces a minimum of 12 contributed articles, expert commentaries, or executive quotes annually in respected, widely recognized publications.
  • Expands relationships with influential reporters, editors, producers, and analysts to secure recurring, high-impact visibility.
  • Long term goal: Champions a lasting, high-visibility strategy aimed at securing marquee national recognition, positioning the company as the organization redefining America’s approach to retirement funding.

Qualifications - Experience/Skills/Competencies

  • Minimum 15 years of experience in corporate communications, public affairs, media relations, or a related discipline.
  • Track record in leading high-stakes communication strategies across large, complex organizations.
  • Strong executive presence and experience advising C-suite leaders in high-visibility environments.
  • Deep expertise in media strategy, brand management, crisis communications, and advocacy.
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate government and public policy landscapes effectively.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills with the ability to simplify complex ideas for various audiences.
  • Experience managing cross-functional teams and collaborating across departments.
  • Proficiency in communication analytics tools, media monitoring, and digital platforms.

Compensation

The base salary range for this position ($200,000 - $300,000) is inclusive of all geographical differences in the labor market. The base salary for the position will be determined based on factors such as the candidate’s work location, skills, education, and experience. In addition to those factors, we believe in the importance of pay equity and consider the internal equity of our current team members in determining any final offer. We offer a competitive benefits package including health, dental, vision, life insurance, paid time-off benefits, flexible spending account, 401(k) with employer match, and ESPP.
