About the Team

OpenAI Finance ensures the organization’s financial integrity and scalability in pursuit of our mission. Our Financial Reporting team is central to delivering accurate, timely, and GAAP-compliant financial information to internal and external stakeholders. We focus on building robust, scalable reporting systems and processes to support rapid organizational growth and complexity.

About the Role

OpenAI is hiring a Head of Financial Reporting & Audit Strategy to architect and deliver best-in-class financial reporting in a technically complex, rapidly evolving, and high-growth environment. This role goes far beyond routine financial statement preparation—it requires designing and leading a sophisticated reporting infrastructure that anticipates organizational growth, addresses evolving accounting complexities, and meets rigorous stakeholder expectations.

In this role, you'll strategically manage our external audit relationship with our Big Four auditor, proactively establishing audit timelines, swiftly addressing challenges, and maintaining continual audit readiness as the company scales. Additionally, you will oversee our investor reporting function, ensuring timely, accurate, and insightful financial communications, and effectively responding to investor inquiries. You will collaborate closely with teams across Accounting, FP&A, Tax, Legal, and Investor Relations to align systems and streamline data integration, enhancing how financial information flows throughout OpenAI.

As the central leader of this critical function, you'll ensure our financial reporting is technically rigorous, scalable, stakeholder-focused, and positioned to confidently support OpenAI’s continued growth and increasing complexity.

This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead and own the end-to-end financial reporting ecosystem, ensuring clear, timely, and GAAP-compliant financial statements, board reports, and executive-level updates.

  • Strategically manage our annual external audit process with our Big Four auditor, proactively identifying and swiftly resolving any issues to maintain audit readiness.

  • Oversee and manage our investor reporting function, ensuring investors receive accurate, timely information and proactive responses to their requests.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Accounting, FP&A, Tax, Legal, Investor Relations, and external auditors to streamline reporting processes and integrate data effectively.

  • Transform complex financial data and audit findings into actionable insights that inform strategic business decisions at senior leadership and board levels.

  • Continuously identify and implement opportunities to automate, simplify, and optimize financial reporting processes, enhancing efficiency and scalability.

You might thrive in this role if you have:

  • 10+ years of accounting experience, including a significant focus on GAAP-based financial reporting in dynamic, high-growth environments (Big 4 and public company experience preferred).

  • Active CPA license and deep technical accounting knowledge, with proven expertise in researching standards, preparing technical memos, and managing complex accounting transactions.

  • Hands-on experience with financial reporting and ERP systems (e.g., Workiva, NetSuite), demonstrating the ability to automate and integrate data for accurate reporting.

  • Strong track record of successfully managing end-to-end reporting and audit processes, consistently delivering accurate, audit-ready documentation.

  • Proven project management and communication skills, adept at simplifying and conveying complex financial information clearly to diverse stakeholders, including executives, boards, and investors.

  • Experience scaling financial reporting and investor communication processes in fast-paced, evolving organizations, comfortable navigating ambiguity and proactively responding to investor inquiries and expectations.

Nice to have

  • Prior leadership or mentorship experience, including building, managing, and developing high-performing teams.

  • Experience working in investor relations or closely partnering with IR teams, managing investor inquiries, and preparing communications for stakeholders.

  • Background working in late-stage startups or large tech companies, particularly those undergoing significant growth, transformation, or scale-up.

  • Exposure to high-visibility financial events, such as operational maturity initiatives, financing rounds, mergers, or acquisitions.

  • Genuine passion for innovation, with an interest in AI and mission-driven organizations, coupled with exceptional problem-solving capabilities and strategic thinking.
