Constellation is an independent research center that brings together people throughout the AI safety ecosystem to accelerate insight, research, and talent through better cooperation. Unlike a conference or summit, Constellation operates continuously, in the form of a physical workspace as well as conference-style talks, workshops, and training bootcamps. Continuous operation allows for relationships and conversations to develop over time, meaningfully fostering trust, collaboration, and shared insight. It also makes Constellation a natural field-building hub by rapidly inspiring, orienting, and connecting people who are newer to the field.
Based in Berkeley, CA, our shared workspace hosts over 200 people per week across dozens of AI safety organizations in nonprofits, academia, industry, and government. Hundreds of other researchers spend time at Constellation for shorter visits each year. We believe this is the strongest and highest-output network of AI safety researchers in the world; dozens of participants in past Constellation programs have gone on to safety-focused roles at companies such as METR, Redwood Research, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, OpenAI, and the US and UK Safety Institutes.
About the role We’re looking for an IT Coordinator or Specialist to provide hands-on, user-facing IT support and operational assistance to our staff, researchers, and visitors. You'll maintain devices, systems, and shared workspace operations to ensure smooth day-to-day functioning. This role includes tactical IT troubleshooting, device management, end-user helpdesk support, and assistance with broader office operations.
Outside of the core work hours (M-F 8:30 AM–5:00 PM), this role may also require being onsite some evenings and weekends for events or urgent issues.
- Manage incoming support tickets, resolving or escalating appropriately
- Provide front-line IT support: troubleshooting hardware/software issues, user account support, and device setup
- Maintain inventory and upkeep of IT equipment (laptops, peripherals, kiosks)
- Assist with IT onboarding/offboarding logistics
- Google Workspace administration – user provisioning, group management, Drive policies, and troubleshooting
- Support physical security operations including access control management (Brivo), camera monitoring, badge issuance, and visitor check-in
- Monitor IT inventory, order supplies, and maintain stock levels
- Provide event support, including workshops and community gatherings
- Help coordinate office space reservations and setup
- Support other teams with cross-functional tasks and projects
- Document common IT issues and solutions to improve team knowledge and user experience
We're open to hiring at either the Coordinator or Specialist level depending on the experience and background of the candidate we find. To give a sense of how we'd think about the difference:
- IT Coordinators own their day-to-day responsibilities end-to-end, resolve support requests reliably and efficiently, and identify improvements within their areas over time.
- IT Specialists bring greater independence to their work, taking on more ambiguous or complex problems, contributing to how systems and processes are designed, and exercising stronger judgment on higher-stakes issues.
You don't need to decide which level to apply for — we'll work that out together as part of the process.
- Experience providing IT or technical user support, ideally in an office environment; the amount and depth will inform which level we hire at
- Friendly, professional interpersonal skills to engage with a diverse range of users
- Strong organizational and multitasking abilities
- Clear written and verbal communication
- Proficiency with Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets), Slack, and ticketing systems
- Comfort learning new software and technology tools quickly
- Some familiarity with office operations or admin is a plus
Nice-to-Have (would inform leveling)
- Slack administration experience
- Familiarity with agentic AI tools
- Comfort with CLI tools and light scripting
- Experience with security tooling or endpoint compliance
- Experience with Google Workspace Administration
You might be a good fit if you:
- Enjoy working in a dynamic, people-facing environment
- Like solving problems and helping others with technical issues
- Are detail-oriented and find satisfaction in creating order from complexity
- Take ownership of your work and follow through reliably
- Are eager to learn and grow your skills over time
- Care about supporting AI safety research and community productivity
The base pay range for this role is $70,000 – $105,000 per year.
Our benefits are hard to beat! They include:
- Healthy lunches and dinners catered by our amazing kitchen team
- Unlimited snacks & drinks
- Generous vacation policy
- 401(k) with employer match
- Employer-paid commuter benefits
- High-quality health, dental, and vision insurance
- Friendly and supportive team
- Regular interaction with AI safety researchers and thought leaders
This is a full time, on-site role. Our Berkeley office is a few steps from the nearest BART (metro) and bus stop. On-site parking is also available.
The ideal candidate for this role will have some combination of the skills and experiences described above. If you are not sure if you are qualified, we strongly encourage you to apply anyway. Beyond the qualifications outlined, our priority is building a team that will help humanity safely navigate the development of transformative AI. If you would be excited to do this work, we’d love to consider you.
We value diversity in all respects and base our hiring decisions on the needs of the organization and individual qualifications. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds, regardless of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, age or disability.
