Airbnb was born in 2007 when two hosts welcomed three guests to their San Francisco home, and has since grown to over 5 million hosts who have welcomed over 2 billion guest arrivals in almost every country across the globe. Every day, hosts offer unique stays and experiences that make it possible for guests to connect with communities in a more authentic way.

The community you will join:

Airbnb is seeking Legal Interns to join the Privacy Legal team for an internship during the Fall Semester from August/September - December (exact dates are flexible). This is a part-time position of no more than 19 hours a week.

The Airbnb Privacy Legal team supports the entire Airbnb business, including product development and privacy compliance requirements. Airbnb is a global company and the Privacy Legal team works to protect the personal data of our hosts and guests worldwide. We support the Product, Cybersecurity, Policy, Litigation, Research, and Corporate Legal teams, among others. We provide guidance on privacy laws globally, including U.S. state and federal privacy laws, the EU’s GDPR, and Brazil’s LGPD, and we collaborate with the Airbnb policy team on proposed privacy legislation.

The ideal candidate must have a solid understanding of privacy law terminology and principles and function independently in a demanding fast-paced environment. We’re looking for a highly adaptable and collaborative person who can handle ambiguity and rapidly shifting priorities with flexibility, patience, and poise.

The difference you will make:

As an intern, you’ll be integrated into a team where you’ll contribute to challenging projects. Your manager, team, and our incredible employee community will strive to be superhosts to you during the term. We provide the support, mentorship, fun, and real world experience needed to accelerate your learning and make a real impact on our product, as Airbnb revolutionizes connection, belonging, and travel.

A typical day:

Working with an in-house specialized privacy legal team is a rare and valuable opportunity to gain practical experience. Our privacy internship program stands apart in that it offers a sustained period of substantive project work. Past interns have provided a great amount of help to the Privacy Legal team, including researching new privacy laws and regulations and reviewing draft privacy agreements. For example, our privacy interns have supported implementing new privacy law requirements and have interacted with global Legal counterparts, engineers, and the Privacy operations team while working on cutting-edge legal issues. Past interns have gone on to secure full- or part-time employment with a number of dynamic technology companies and leading law firms.

As an intern, you’ll be expected to:

  • Collaborate with multiple team members to achieve project milestones
  • Communicate with the Legal team and other stakeholders to provide project updates
  • Proactively seek and provide feedback throughout the internship
  • Actively participate in, and contribute to, the Legal and broader Airbnb community

Important Note: Our Privacy Legal team is global and frequently works with employees in other time zones. If hired as an intern, you may need to accommodate global teammates from time-to-time.

Your expertise:

This opportunity is for second-year (2L) or third-year (3L) students enrolled full-time at a nationally-accredited law school with the following background:

  • At least one of the following: completed privacy coursework OR earned a CIPP certification certification OR have previous experience within the privacy space
  • Strong interest in learning about in-house legal practice, specifically in privacy law
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, detail-oriented, and organized
  • Comfortable reaching out and initiating communication with various team members
  • Strong interpersonal skills and interest in building relationships and collaborating with teams within and outside of Legal
  • Adaptable and able to adjust plans and manage changes effectively
  • Able to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and handle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Strong analytical and research skills, with the ability to review and distill information from multiple sources into concise and pertinent legal memoranda
  • Work authorization for employment in the United States is required (CPT/OPT is accepted) - visa sponsorship is unavailable

How to apply:

As part of your application package, you’ll be asked to submit the following: (1) a resume, (2) unofficial transcripts showing privacy coursework or CIPP certification documentation, and (3) a cover letter that addresses the following:

  • how one or more Airbnb Core Values resonates with you,
  • why you are interested in privacy law,
  • what positive significant impact this internship will provide for you, and
  • how your background meets the expertise requirements above.
