Work Arrangement
This role is based remotely but if you live within a 50-mile radius of Warren, Detroit, Austin, or Mountain View, you are expected to report to that location three times a week, at a minimum.
Role Overview
The Life Insurance & Voluntary Programs Specialist supports the design, administration, and continuous improvement of GM's U.S. benefit programs, with a focus on life insurance and voluntary benefit programs.
Key Responsibilities
Program Operations & Governance
  • Support end-to-end administration of assigned life insurance and voluntary benefit programs.
  • Maintain deep knowledge of plan provisions, eligibility rules, and collective bargaining language and translate them into clear procedures and employee-facing materials.
  • Develop and maintain program guides, desk procedures, training materials, and knowledge articles .
  • Support internal controls, audits, and risk reviews for assigned programs.
  • Serve as subject matter expert for voluntary benefits, evaluating competitiveness, participation, employee value, and financial impact; recommend enhancements or changes.
  • Align voluntary benefits with core programs to ensure a consistent employee experience across enrollment, eligibility, communications, and claims.
  • Support UAW-GM National Union Negotiations and benefit conferences with data, materials, and implementation considerations.

Case, Claim, and Appeals Support
  • Act as an escalation point for complex claims and cases, partnering with TPAs, Legal, and HR.
  • Compile and synthesize case documentation and summarize facts and provisions for Plan Administrator, EBPC, and internal decision makers .
  • Draft acknowledgment and decision letters in line with ERISA, DOL, state requirements, and plan documents and identify trends for process or policy improvement.

Vendor & TPA Management
  • Oversee day-to-day vendor and TPA performance , including SLAs, KPIs, error trends, and service issues.
  • Support RFPs, renewals, pricing/fee reviews, and plan design changes with data and analysis.
  • Ensure accurate implementation and documentation of plan changes, rates, file layouts, and interfaces .
  • Manage vendor invoicing and payments and coordinate with Finance and Procurement.
  • Coordinate system access and data security needs for TPAs and benefit vendors.

Data, Analytics, Compliance & Projects
  • Prepare and interpret recurring and ad hoc reports on claims, costs, reserves, recoveries, participation, and trends.
  • Use Excel, PowerPoint, and tools such as Power BI/Tableau to highlight insights, risks, and opportunities for leadership.
  • Support budgeting, accruals, insurance filings, assessments, and reserve analyses through data gathering and reconciliation.
  • Help ensure alignment with ERISA, IRS, DOL, insurance regulations, and plan documents .
  • Identify opportunities to simplify, standardize, and automate processes and lead or support cross-functional projects and system changes.
  • Partner with HRIS/IT/Security on eligibility, interfaces, access, and responsible use of AI and automation tools .

Stakeholder Partnership & Communication
  • Collaborate with HR, Labor Relations, Legal, Payroll, Finance, plant/functional leadership, UAW Benefit Representatives, and the International UAW .
  • Translate technical and regulatory requirements into clear, practical guidance for HR, leaders, and employees.
  • Prepare concise, well-structured materials for leadership, governance forums, EBPC, and union discussions .
  • Serve as a key liaison for Labor Relations and UAW stakeholders on life insurance and voluntary benefit topics.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business, Finance, Risk Management, Actuarial Science , or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in employee benefits, with meaningful exposure to Life and AD&D / survivor benefits .
  • Strong understanding of eligibility rules, plan documents vs. SPDs, and payroll/HRIS interactions .
  • Advanced Excel and data analysis skills; experience with large datasets.
  • Proven ability to manage details and multiple deadlines with high accuracy.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication , including employee-friendly explanations and professional correspondence.
  • Demonstrated collaboration with HR, Legal, vendors/TPAs, and union benefit representatives.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with a large, complex, multi-state employer or carrier/TPA environment for life insurance.
  • Familiarity with unionized or collectively bargained environments .
  • Working knowledge of ERISA claims and appeals .
  • Experience with RFPs, renewals, vendor negotiations, and financial analyses .
  • Experience using Power BI, Tableau, or similar tools for dashboards and visualization.
  • Comfort with AI-enabled tools for drafting, research, and documentation within governance frameworks.

Compensation:
The compensation information is a good faith estimate only. It is based on what a successful applicant might be paid in accordance with applicable state laws. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position, as well as geography of the selected candidate.
  • The salary range for this role is $88,100 to $140,700. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
  • Bonus Potential: An incentive pay program offers payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.

This role is based remotely, but if the selected candidate lives within a specific mile radius of a GM hub, they will be expected to report to the location three times a week {or other frequency dictated by your manager}.
The selected candidate will be required to travel <25% for this role.
This job is not eligible for relocation benefits. Any relocation costs would be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
