About Ladder

We saw a problem within the life insurance industry: getting covered took too long, involved too much paperwork, and required too many in-person meetings with sales agents. Having lost his father at a young age, our CEO, Jamie, was determined to make it easier for people to get the coverage they needed to provide for their families. So, we got to work. We developed a method of real-time underwriting leveraging AI and, in doing so, reduced the months-long process of applying for life insurance to minutes. Our digital experience is quick (instant decisions!), loved by users (check out our Trustpilot or Google reviews) and prolific ($74 billion+ in coverage provided).

Please note, Ladder is not currently sponsoring or transferring OPT or H1-B visas.

What You’ll Do

We believe life insurance innovation must happen in the context of sound underwriting decisions. As our Life Underwriting Auditor, you will bridge the gap between automated data workflows and traditional underwriting, ensuring our real-time decisions stay accurate and high quality as our models evolve. You will partner with engineering, data science, actuarial, compliance, and customer experience teams.

  • Conduct underwriting audits and case reviews to ensure accuracy, quality, and adherence to guidelines.
  • Review all data to assess mortality and risk probability. Determine rating class, terms, and conditions based on established rules, rates, and guidelines.
  • Analyze medical, personal, and financial data from both traditional and innovative data sources to make final, case-by-case decisions on individual applications, with a delegation of authority of up to $8 million.
  • Perform complex case reviews and review accelerated underwriting decisions, including cases flagged by automated engines and rule knockouts.
  • Evaluate automated underwriting engine outputs, data inputs, and predictive models. Update audit reviews as these models evolve, and recognize gaps in rules that lead to actionable updates.
  • Work with many cross-functional teams and stakeholders, clearly communicating audit findings and recommendations.
  • Contribute to internal and cross-functional projects.

Who You Are

  • A bridge-builder who is comfortable in both automated data workflows and traditional underwriting.
  • A data-driven, structured thinker who turns audit findings into actionable insights.
  • Adaptable and curious about machine learning, and comfortable as models and rules change.
  • A strong communicator and negotiator who builds trust with many teams and stakeholders.
  • An innovator. Someone who is passionate about insurance, and wants to help create a new paradigm to make insurance more accessible and affordable for the next generation of buyers
  • An optimist, committed to continuous learning, iteration, and user-centered everything.

Experience Required

  • A delegation of authority of up to $8 million.
  • Experience conducting different types of underwriting audits and case reviews.  This experience should include post-issue audits.
  • Experience with complex case reviews and accelerated underwriting.
  • Familiarity with automated underwriting engines, data inputs, predictive models, and an understanding of rule knockouts.
  • Analytical and technical skills for data analysis.
  • Proven ability to manage high volumes, fluctuating queues, and turnaround times.
  • Experience working with many cross-functional teams and stakeholders, and contributing to internal and cross-functional projects.
  • Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills.
