Title:  Machine Learning/Computer Vision Research Scientist

Job Location:  2535 Augustine Drive, 3rd Floor, Santa Clara, CA 95054

Duties: Research and implement advanced deep learning models for custom computer vision tasks, including object detection, identification, tracking, and comparison, with a focus on developing generalized AI solutions capable of few-shot learning in data-scarce environments.  Execute proof-of-concepts of the solutions with customers in machine learning, deep learning and computer vision to create innovative algorithms and solutions for smart industry, social innovation and the Internet of Things. Work with business units to commercialize successful proof-of-concepts. Protect Hitachi’s IP through patents and other activities and publish technical results in leading venues to establish Hitachi as a leader in big data and advanced analytics. Conduct research for solving challenging problems in the industrial domain. Work with customers in co-innovation: specifically, innovating novel machine learning/deep learning and natural language processing techniques for addressing numerous research issues in the industrial domain within the company and for outside customers. Solve customer research problems: i) understand the customer problem through multiple discussions with customer, ii) apply mathematical formulation of the problem, iii) understand customer data, iv) implementation of the concept and testing the hypothesis through experimentation, v) repeated discussion with customer and make appropriate modifications to the proposed solution to meet customers’ business needs, vi) work with the production team to deliver a robust and reliable end-user solution. Develop state of the art in Industrial AI – application of AI and ML to solving real world industrial and societal challenges. Solve research problems by: i) formulating a research hypothesis ii) proposing mathematical formulation to the test the hypothesis iii) solving for the mathematical formulation iv) testing/refining the solution either theoretically or on data. Develop projects in some combination of commercialization, patent and research paper publication. Present research works to external venues, participating and organizing internal research workshops and conferences and other research related activities.  
 

Minimum education and experience required: PhD degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field plus 2 years of experience in Machine Learning or related field. 

Skills required: Research experience in machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, generative AI, other machine learning algorithms and their applications. Demonstrated programming skills and knowledge of data science tools and libraries in Python or R. Experience using machine learning and deep learning frameworks, such as PyTorch, TensorFlow or scikit-learn. Experience in publishing research findings in peer-reviewed journals or obtaining patents for inventions. Experience developing algorithms in languages including Python, C, C++ or Java. Employer will accept any amount of graduate coursework, graduate research experience or professional experience with the required skills. 

For California only (as required by California’s Pay Transparency for Pay Equity Act (SB 1162): A good faith estimate of the expected salary for this position in our California office salary range that the employer reasonably expects to pay for the position upon hire is $164,403 - $193,545. Pay is determined based on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, depth of experience in the practice area. Employees are eligible to participate in Hitachi America’s variable pay program, subject to the program’s conditions and restrictions.
