Position Summary:


The Managing Attorney is primarily responsible for managing and supervision of a local office or region which includes coaching and mentoring of attorneys, and administrative functions. This position may involve file handling responsibility of a reduced litigation caseload.

In CA: Typical hiring range is $214,694.28 to $262,404.13 


The expected base salary for this position will vary depending on a number of factors, including relevant experience, skills and location.

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions: 


  • Supervision and management of an office or region includes but is not limited to coaching, mentoring, and supervising attorneys within the local office/region. This position is the lead attorney in the local office/region charged with the responsibility of reviewing and assigning new files as well as administrative functions. Coaching, mentoring and supervision includes but is not limited to:
    • Review of new file assignments and assignment of files within office;
    • One 30 minute education and training session per month;
    • Review of 2 files for each attorney per month;
    • Review of one plaintiff deposition transcript for each direct report attorney per quarter;
    • Monthly 1:1 meetings with each attorney discussing monthly file reviews, cases of concern, case evaluations, upcoming trials, follow up on recent education and training, performance against goals, and journaling the same;
    • Detailed review of all pre-trial reports;
    • Roundtable with claims 60 days before trial;
  • Maintaining an active diary of cases of concern;
  • File handling responsibility of a reduced caseload from case inception through post-trial motions maintaining best practices as dictated by the Attorney Audit and circumstances of each case. 
  • Miscellaneous tasks and projects as may be assigned by department leaders.
  • Other functions may be assigned

Qualifications

Education:

Minimum: Requires a law degree and admission to the bar in the state(s) where team and files are venued.

Preferred: Requires a law degree from a state accredited or ABA accredited law school and admission to the bar in the state(s) were practicing.


Experience:

Minimum: 5 plus years of insurance defense experience and 10 insurance defense personal injury jury trials or equivalent litigation experience. Previous supervision of attorneys and staff. 

Preferred: 10 plus years of insurance defense experience. At least 10 insurance defense personal injury jury trials including the defense of higher exposure cases. Previous supervision of attorneys and staff.


Skills and Abilities:

Minimum: Comprehensive knowledge of insurance, torts, evidence, civil procedure and trial practice. Effective communication, persuasion and analytical skills. Soft skills including coaching, mentoring and leading attorneys and staff. Requires considerable automobile travel up to 20% of work time. Attorney must be able to work independently with minimum direction and good organizational skills necessary to manage an attorney team and caseload. Must meet established company standards regarding personal driving history and current license status to be eligible for position.
