Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The Sr. Perfusionist performs extracorporeal support for adult patients with congenital or acquired cardiovascular orders. This role provides monitoring, interpretation and intervention. Performs functions necessary for the support treatment, measurement or supplementation of cardiovascular system, circulatory system with or without the oxygenation circuit, or any combination of those activities described in the Department of Consumer Affairs, Medical Board of California including Heart-lung machine, counterpulsation, ventricular assistance, blood conversation techniques, myocardial and organ preservation, and extracorporeal life support.

Administers pharmacological and therapeutic agents, blood products, or anesthetic agents through the extracorporeal circuit or intravenous line as ordered by a physician or surgeon. Performs blood chemistry analysis and physiologic monitoring including blood gas and blood chemistry, anticoagulation and hemostasis, thermal regulation, and other physiological indicators. Evaluates signs and symptoms and implements changes based on observed abnormalities according to protocol. Ensures and prepares equipment and specialty items for each procedure.

Under a direct order or as prescribed by a licensed physician, a perfusionist may induce hypothermia/hyperthermia, conduct hemodilution, concentration or filtration, administer medications or blood products. A perfusionist is part of the CVOR team and works collaboratively to facilitate patient/procedure flow. Acts as a patient advocate in all ethical and legal aspects. Decontaminates and cleans perfusion related equipment to guidelines. Documents care in the medical records and database. Completes perfusion pre-procedure check-list.

Collaborates and assists in planning, developing departmental goals, development and training needs. Expands scientific base by initiating review or literature, disseminating recent innovations and research findings relevant to specialty and patient outcomes. Ability to respond to on-call requirements within 30 minutes.

As a Sr. Perfusionist, serves as a resource to others during complex case set-up and performance. Acts a mentor to all members of the perfusion team. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Completion and graduation from a CAAHEP accredited school of cardiovascular perfusion. Section 2592 (a) (b)

Five to 10 years of experience performing at least 40 perfusion cases per year preferred

Bachelor’s Degree in an appropriate discipline preferred

  • ABCP: Cardiovascular Perfusionists - Certification, or certification eligible, by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (Certification must be achieved within 24 months of start date.)
