Job Summary: The Perfusionist is responsible for a wide range of mechanical life support systems including but not limited to Cardiopulmonary Bypass (CPB) and Extracorporeal Membrane Circulation machine. Perfusionist takes over functions of a patient's heart and lungs during surgery or respiratory failure including maintaining the heart and lung apparatus during cardiopulmonary bypass. In charge of setting up CPB, ECMO, and operating right and/or left ventricular assist devise monitoring, set-up and insertion of intra-aortic balloon catheter, operating of intra-aortic balloon pump, intraoperative autologous recovery for transfusion, and invasive pressure monitoring. Assesses and interprets data about patient's status in order to identify each patient's needs and provide the appropriate care. Provides a positive influence to facilitate change and optimize patient satisfaction and outcomes. Utilizes interpersonal skills that portray professionalism and maximize excellence in customer service and safe patient care. Demonstrates knowledge of service recovery methodologies and resolves issues with speed and sensitivity. Contributes to a work environment of caring and cooperation among a culturally diverse workforce and patient population. Participates in On-Call rotation. Performs other duties as needed.
Education and Experience: Bachelor of Science Degree in Cardiovascular Perfusion Science. Must be able to demonstrate competencies in cardiovascular perfusion and have a thorough knowledge of perfusion techniques and theory.
Knowledge and Skills: Demonstrates competencies in cardiovascular diseases and mechanical circulatory support and perfusion scope of practice. Solid knowledge of healthcare regulations and survey process required. Exhibits professional behavior at all times. Ability to apply theoretical concepts to clinical practice and continually expands knowledge base and clinical skills. Able to read and write legibly in English (and Spanish preferred) with professional quality; use computer, printer, and software programs necessary to the position, e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, electronic medical record, electronic event reporting program; relate and communicate positively, effectively, and professionally with others; be assertive and consistent in following and/or enforcing policies; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; lead, supervise, teach, and collaborate; accept direction; think critically; work independently with minimal supervision; perform basic math and statistical functions; manage multiple assignments effectively; organize and prioritize workload; work well under pressure; problem solve; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail; distinguish colors and smells as necessary for patient care; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone; identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the work place/patient care; see adequately to read computer screens, medical records, and written documents necessary to position; discern temperature variances through touch.
Licensures and Certifications: Board Certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) preferred. Or be ABCP certification-eligible and receive certification within 1 year of hire date. Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by the American Heart Association required.
