Step into the role of a Principal Architect at JPMorganChase and become a driving force behind the development and adoption of cutting-edge, cloud-based technologies.

As a Principal Architect at JPMorganChase within Infrastructure Platforms, you provide expertise to enhance and develop architecture platforms based on modern cloud-based technologies while supporting the adoption of strategic enterprise reliability solutions. You will partner closely with Site Reliability Engineering teams, application developers, platform engineering teams, and senior technology leaders to drive the design, adoption, and evolution of reliability tooling and engineering practices across the organization. Leveraging your advanced architecture capabilities, you will help teams consistently adopt approved reliability capabilities, establish reusable engineering patterns, and shape the technical direction of enterprise-scale tooling.

This is a hands-on architecture leadership role that combines strategic architecture, technical engineering depth, and cross-functional influence to improve resiliency, operational excellence, and software delivery outcomes across a large, complex technology environment. You will move between defining cross-organization architecture and working alongside engineers to review integrations, identify failure modes, and guide practical implementation — earning credibility through technical depth and creating lasting impact through patterns that teams can actually adopt. In your first year, you will be expected to deliver a prioritized architecture roadmap for reliability tooling, establish a minimum set of cross-organization reliability patterns tested with early-adopter teams, define architectural guardrails for new tooling and integrations, and build a repeatable intake and decision process for requests to adopt, extend, procure, or build reliability capabilities.

This position is subject to Section 19 of the Federal Deposit Insurance Act. As such, an employment offer for this position is contingent on JPMorganChase's review of criminal conviction history, including pretrial diversions or program entries.

Job responsibilities

  • Advise cross-functional teams on technology selection, architectural decisions, and reliability strategies to achieve target-state architecture and improve operational resilience
  • Define the architectural direction, integration standards, and non-functional requirements for observability, incident management, resiliency testing, operational readiness, service ownership, and automation platforms — including clear ownership and lifecycle expectations for tools, integrations, extensions, and operational data
  • Establish reusable enterprise patterns for service onboarding, service-level indicators, service-level objectives, error budgets, dashboards, runbooks, incident management, automated remediation, and operational handoff processes, and define and maintain the production-readiness baseline so that no service is considered production-ready without a named owner, documented objectives and alert thresholds, structured telemetry, tested runbooks, incident-routing integration, and evidence of resilience and recovery testing
  • Guide engineering teams in embedding reliability capabilities throughout the software delivery lifecycle — including telemetry, monitoring, alerting, resilience validation, and operational readiness — rather than treating reliability as a production-only concern, and support rollout through pilots, reference implementations, onboarding guidance, and feedback-driven improvement
  • Create scalable architectural frameworks and partner with engineering teams to design and develop application programming interfaces, automation workflows, event-driven integrations, and shared reliability services
  • Develop secure and high-quality production code, and review and debug code written by others to ensure alignment with architecture, resiliency, security, and governance standards
  • Evaluate proposed tooling and architecture solutions, promote reuse-first approaches, and establish guardrails that reduce duplication while enabling consistent adoption — balancing a common enterprise approach with reasonable flexibility for teams that have materially different operational needs
  • Develop multi-year roadmaps aligned with business priorities, architecture strategy, and enterprise reliability objectives, using incident trends, operational feedback, and adoption data to improve patterns and prioritize the tooling roadmap
  • Apply enterprise-authorized artificial intelligence capabilities within architecture and engineering workflows to accelerate architecture analysis, roadmap development, and design decisioning, with human-in-the-loop validation and appropriate handling of sensitive data
  • Serve as the function's subject matter expert for reliability architecture and contribute to the development of technical methods, governance models, and artificial intelligence–enabled engineering patterns that improve operational excellence at scale
  • Communicate technical trade-offs, delivery impact, reliability risk, and investment needs clearly to engineers, architects, product leaders, and executive stakeholders, and coach Site Reliability Engineers, developers, architects, and product teams on reliability patterns and their intended application in real delivery contexts

Required qualifications, capabilities, and skills

  • Formal training or certification on architecture concepts and 10+ years applied experience
  • Extensive experience in software architecture, application architecture, platform architecture, Site Reliability Engineering, or comparable technical leadership roles within large-scale enterprise environments
  • Hands-on practical experience delivering system design, application development, testing, and operational stability for distributed systems and production applications
  • Expertise in one or more programming languages and modern software engineering practices
  • Deep knowledge of software architecture, cloud-native technologies, distributed systems, application development, and enterprise technology platforms
  • Strong experience designing, operating, and improving highly reliable production systems, including observability, telemetry, monitoring, alerting, and service health capabilities
  • Experience with service-level objectives, service-level indicators, error budgets, incident management, operational readiness, resiliency engineering, disaster recovery, and capacity planning
  • Demonstrated ability to establish reusable architecture patterns, turn successful technical practices into execution-ready cross-organization assets — including reference architectures, templates, checklists, decision trees, and architecture decision records — and drive adoption across multiple engineering teams
  • Experience designing integrations across developer platforms, operational tooling, service catalogs, workflow systems, automation services, and production engineering environments
  • Demonstrated experience applying enterprise-authorized artificial intelligence capabilities within architecture and engineering workflows, with strong validation practices and awareness of data sensitivity
  • Ability to lead through influence across Site Reliability Engineering, application engineering, product, security, platform, operations, and senior stakeholder communities, and to present technical trade-offs in both engineering and business terms

Preferred qualifications, capabilities, and skills

  • Experience in financial services or other highly regulated, high-availability environments
  • Experience with cloud-native platforms, Kubernetes, container orchestration, service mesh technologies, infrastructure automation, and distributed systems architecture
  • Experience designing and scaling internal developer platforms, operational platforms, or engineering productivity platforms supporting large engineering organizations
  • Expertise with observability technologies, incident-response platforms, reliability analytics, and automated remediation capabilities
  • Experience establishing service ownership models, operational governance frameworks, and enterprise production-readiness standards across a large organization
  • Understanding of security architecture, data classification, access controls, compliance requirements, auditability, and retention policies related to operational data
  • Experience mentoring architects, Site Reliability Engineers, and engineering teams while leading large-scale reliability or platform transformation initiatives
