IDEAS (Insights, Data Engineering, Analytics and Systems) is Microsoft's central data and intelligence organization supporting Microsoft 365, Security, Modern Work, and Consumer businesses. We deliver the data, measurement, analytics, and insights that help leaders make informed decisions, improve customer experiences, and accelerate business growth across some of Microsoft's most important products and services.
We are seeking a Principal Data Science Manager to lead a team of approximately 10 to 12 data scientists focused on delivering actionable insights and advancing data-driven decision making. This leader will work closely with business leaders, product teams, engineering organizations, and analytics partners to identify opportunities, define priorities, and translate complex data into clear business recommendations.
The ideal candidate combines strong business acumen with deep analytical expertise. They are comfortable engaging with senior stakeholders, influencing strategy through data, and ensuring teams focus on the highest-value opportunities. Success in this role requires the ability to connect data science investments to measurable business outcomes while building and developing a high-performing team.

Responsibilities
Partner with Senior leaders to influence decisions through data-driven insights
Partner with cross functional business and product teams to translate complex analyses into actionable recommendations
Deliver successful analytics and data science solutions that drive business impact
Lead, coach, and grow a data science team, including hiring, performance management, career development, and capability building.
Qualifications
- Doctorate in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 4+ years data science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results)
- OR Master's Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 7+ years data science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results)
- OR Bachelor's Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 9+ years data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results) OR equivalent experience.
- 5+ years people-management experience.
Other Requirements:
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Microsoft 365 product suite.

Data Science M6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $165,600 - $296,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $220,800 - $331,200 per year.
