If you are looking for a game-changing career at one of the world's leading financial institutions, you've come to the right place.

As a Principal Engineer, Developer Platform Engineering at JPMorganChase within the Commercial and Investment Bank's Digital Channels & Connectivity team, you will own the technical strategy and execution for the developer platform that serves a portfolio of 1,000+ services and a 1,000-engineer organization. This is a hands-on leadership role for an engineer who sets direction rather than waits for it. You will define how engineers discover, build, ship, and operate software—through a unified developer portal, first-class observability and monitoring, and safe, controlled feature delivery. You will set standards, build the paved roads and self-service tooling that make the right thing the easy thing, and influence architectural decisions as a peer to senior engineering leaders. If you want real ownership, deep technical challenges, and the chance to raise the bar for an entire organization, this is the role for you.

Job responsibilities

  • Own the technical strategy and roadmap for the internal developer platform, delivering a unified developer portal (e.g., Backstage-style) with software catalog, service ownership, golden-path templates, and self-service scaffolding that teams adopt with minimal specialist support
  • Set technical direction for observability and monitoring standards across the portfolio—structured logging, metrics, distributed tracing, SLOs, and error budgets—and drive adoption through scorecards and release-readiness gates
  • Build the observability platform and paved roads that make instrumentation a default, correlating signals across logs, metrics, traces, real user monitoring, and synthetic monitoring to surface service health and portfolio-level risk
  • Define and own the feature-flagging and progressive-delivery strategy, including flag lifecycle governance, safe rollout and rollback patterns, experimentation, and controls that reduce release risk at scale
  • Establish platform standards for service onboarding, dependency and ownership metadata, scorecards, and tech-health signals surfaced directly in the developer portal
  • Deliver self-service tooling and inner-sourced frameworks that shift operability, instrumentation, and release safety earlier in the development lifecycle
  • Influence standards, architectural decisions, and release readiness as a peer to senior engineering leaders, and coach application teams on adopting resilient, operable, platform-first engineering practices
  • Architects and governs agentic AI-enabled engineering workflows (using enterprise-authorized tools within the work environment) to improve delivery speed, code quality, and operational outcomes at scale (e.g., AI-driven PR review assistance, test generation/maintenance, release readiness checks, incident triage and root-cause acceleration), while defining guardrails for validation, security, resiliency, and reuse across teams
  • Applies knowledge of tools within the Software Development Life Cycle toolchain, including enterprise-authorized AI-assisted development and automation capabilities, to improve the value realized by automation at scale

Required qualifications, capabilities, and skills

  • Extensive engineering experience (typically 15+ years overall) with 8+ years in developer platform engineering, observability/SRE, or large-scale internal tooling for high-traffic distributed systems
  • Demonstrated experience scaling engineering practices across large organizations (500+ engineers) through self-service platforms, paved roads, maturity models, and adoption playbooks
  • Hands-on experience designing and operating an internal developer portal and software catalog (e.g., Backstage or equivalent), including golden paths, templates, and plugin/extension development
  • Deep expertise in observability and monitoring—structured logging, metrics, and distributed tracing across request chains—using tools such as Dynatrace, OpenTelemetry, Grafana, Prometheus, or Kibana, including continuous profiling approaches
  • Hands-on experience designing and governing feature-flag and progressive-delivery systems (e.g., LaunchDarkly, Unleash, or equivalent), including flag lifecycle management, canary/blue-green rollouts, and automated rollback
  • Hands-on software engineering proficiency in Java and Spring Boot, with strong familiarity in modern front-end ecosystems such as React and server-side rendering
  • Strong CI/CD and DevOps experience, embedding operability, instrumentation, and quality gates into pipelines with environment-aware execution and enforceable release-readiness checks
  • Kubernetes and cloud platform experience (e.g., Amazon EKS on AWS), including infrastructure as code and operational cost awareness
  • Proven ability to influence senior technical leaders, communicate complex trade-offs clearly, set engineering standards, and drive platform adoption across many teams
  • Demonstrated experience designing and leading adoption of agentic AI-enabled development practices (using enterprise-authorized tools within the work environment) across teams, including setting standards for human-in-the-loop validation, auditability/traceability of changes, and secure handling of sensitive data
  • Strong understanding of responsible AI use and control expectations in engineering workflows, including security/resiliency implications, data sensitivity, and risk-based governance; ability to influence senior technical leaders on safe scaling patterns and reuse

Preferred qualifications, capabilities, and skills

  • Experience operating in financial-services scale, low-latency systems, and/or regulated environments
  • Experience building developer-experience metrics and tech-health scorecards (e.g., DORA metrics) and driving measurable improvements in developer productivity
  • Experience with front-end observability and performance signals, including Core Web Vitals, real user monitoring, and browser-based synthetic testing (e.g., Playwright or WebPageTest)
  • Familiarity with service mesh technologies and traffic-control patterns such as backpressure and circuit breaking
  • Strong systems and cloud background, including Linux tooling, JVM tuning, containers, networking, and modern HTTP optimization
  • Experience designing event-driven and streaming observability (e.g., Kafka) and payment-system operational telemetry
  • Practical application of large language models and agent-based automation for incident triage, anomaly detection, automated reporting, or developer-portal workflows at scale
