You will be part of a team that operates at the intersection of cloud infrastructure, Artificial Intelligence, and large-scale distributed systems. From enabling safe maintenance of hyperscale datacenter fleets to orchestrating lifecycle operations across massive Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) clusters powering cutting-edge AI workloads, you will tackle some of the industry's most complex engineering challenges. This is a unique opportunity to shape foundational platforms that accelerate innovation across Azure, Microsoft 365, Bing, and Microsoft's rapidly expanding Artificial Intelligence ecosystem.
As a Software Engineering Manager, you will lead a team of talented engineers responsible for designing, building, and operating large-scale cloud services that automate infrastructure maintenance, improve reliability, and enable safe evolution of Microsoft's global infrastructure. You will collaborate closely with engineering, operations, and product leaders across the company to deliver platforms that improve operational excellence, accelerate innovation, and drive business impact at an unprecedented scale.
This opportunity will allow you to build deep expertise in hyperscale cloud infrastructure, Artificial Intelligence platforms, and distributed systems. Lead platform transformations that influence some of Microsoft's most strategic cloud and Artificial Intelligence investments. Accelerate your leadership growth through cross-functional collaboration, strategic decision-making, and ownership of globally impactful engineering initiatives.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and grow a high-performing team of software engineers responsible for building and operating the platforms that enable safe, reliable, and efficient lifecycle management of Microsoft's global cloud infrastructure and Artificial Intelligence platforms.
  • Drive the technical vision, architecture, and execution of large-scale distributed systems that automate infrastructure maintenance, improve reliability, and enhance operational efficiency across Azure and other Microsoft services.
  • Partner with engineering, data center, operations, and product teams to deliver innovative solutions that support some of the world's largest Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) supercomputing environments and cloud infrastructures.
  • Establish a culture of technical excellence, operational rigor, accountability, and continuous learning while coaching and developing engineers to achieve their full potential.
  • Lead platform modernization and automation initiatives that accelerate infrastructure evolution, improve service availability, and enable safe operation at hyperscale.
  • Use data, experimentation, and customer insights to drive engineering investments, prioritize business outcomes, and continuously improve platform reliability, performance, and efficiency.
  • Collaborate across organizations to influence strategy, align technical direction, and deliver foundational capabilities that support Microsoft's cloud and Artificial Intelligence ambitions at global scale. 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
    • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 12+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 4+ years people management experience.

Software Engineering M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $142,800 - $274,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $188,000 - $304,200 per year.
