Company Overview

Promise modernizes how government agencies and utilities support people in financial difficulty. We build technology that makes it simple for residents to receive benefits, engage with assistance programs, set up flexible payment plans, and stay on track—while helping agencies increase efficiency, recover revenue, and deliver services with dignity. Our mission is to transform public systems so they work better for everyone, especially the most vulnerable.

Our team includes experts from companies like Palantir, Google, Stripe , and esteemed government leaders. We work hard and believe deeply in what we do. We're looking for excellent people to build innovative, resilient technology.

Backed by over $50 million in funding from top investors – such as Reid Hoffman, Howard Schultz, Michael Seibel, Y Combinator, 8VC, The General Partnership, First Round Capital, Kapor Capital, XYZ Ventures, and Bronze Investments – Promise has been recognized as one of Fast Company's "World's Most Innovative Companies of 2022,” “Forbes Next Billion-Dollar Startups 2024,” and Y Combinator’s #1 GovTech startup.

Role Overview

As a Product Designer at Promise, you’ll take the lead on turning ambiguous, horizontal problems into beautiful, intuitive product experiences that scale across products and customers. You will be a strategic partner to Engineering, Product, and Deployment Strategists, shaping strategy and driving clarity from discovery through shipping. You’ll set a high bar for UI/UX and interaction design, steward our design system, and help transform real-world operational complexity into experiences that residents and agency teams love to use.

This is a role for a maker–leader: you’ll design, prototype, validate with users, and raise the bar for the whole organization while owning outcomes—not just tasks.

What You'll Do
  • Shape design strategy for key product investments. Bring structure to amorphous, cross-cutting problem areas; define product primitives and patterns others can build on.

  • Design end-to-end experiences. Create flows, interactions, and high-fidelity UIs that simplify complex, real‑world workflows for residents, caseworkers, and operational teams.

  • Prototype to learn. Use rapid prototyping to explore approaches, validate with customers and GTM partners, and derisk big bets before we build.

  • Evolve our design systems. Maintain and extend accessible, scalable components; ensure quality and coherence across surfaces.

  • Partner across the business. Work shoulder‑to‑shoulder with PM/Forward Deployed Engineering to ship; collaborate with Sales to gather field insights, shape narratives, and enable adoption.

  • Raise the bar. Lead critiques, mentor designers, and strengthen our product decision-making through clear storytelling and evidence.

  • Close the loop. Instrument and learn from usage, support tickets, and qualitative research to iterate quickly post‑launch.

Responsibilities (how you’ll be measured)
  • You consistently bring clarity to ambiguity and drive cross‑team alignment on the right problems to solve.

  • Your work ships with high interaction and visual craft, measurably improving adoption, completion rates, and time‑to‑value.

  • Our design system and patterns are stronger, faster to build with, and more accessible (AA+).

  • Partners across Promise cite you as a strategic peer who improves products, experiences, and outcomes.

  • You multiply the team—mentoring others, evolving rituals, and upleveling quality across the product surface area.

What You'll Bring
  • 8+ years designing complex, multi‑surface digital products (or equivalent impact), including substantial ownership at a senior IC level.

  • A portfolio that demonstrates exceptional UI and interaction design, UX problem‑solving, and simplification of gnarly, horizontal problems.

  • Systems thinking and experience building/evolving design systems at scale.

  • Prototyping and research fluency—from framing hypotheses to running lightweight tests and synthesizing evidence.

  • Storytelling and influence—clear writing, crisp visuals, and the ability to move a room from ambiguity to alignment.

  • Cross‑functional muscle—comfortable partnering with PM/Eng and collaborating with Sales/Success on narratives, demos, and feedback loops.

  • Nice to have: experience in fintech/govtech, payments or billing flows, accessibility and inclusive design, multilingual interfaces, or data‑heavy/AI‑assisted workflows.

How We Support Our People
  • 100% paid health coverage

  • Generous PTO and sick leave

  • Lunch, snacks, and coffee provided

  • Company retreats

  • Hybrid Work: We deeply value in-person collaboration and are in-office or on-site at least four days a week.
