About you

Additive is seeking a highly skilled Tax Expert to join our dynamic team. As a Tax Expert, you will play a crucial role in automating the ingestion of tax documents, allowing tax professionals to focus on their most valuable work. We're looking for candidates with a strong background in individual (Form 1040) tax from a top accounting firm, or comparable depth in state tax, including state-level work on partnership (Form 1065) returns.

If you are passionate about leveraging technology to transform the tax and accounting industry, apply your expertise, and possess the requisite skills and experience, we invite you to move from doing tax work to designing the systems that do it!

In this role, you will:

  • Build workpapers from tax returns and supporting documents to train our algorithms, and deepen the whole team's tax fluency along the way.

  • Design the labeling & extraction schema — the fields, structure, and rules that turn a messy return into clean, machine-usable data.

  • Test and verify engineering output, data mapping, and product UX — you define what "correct" means and catch what's wrong before it ships.

  • Shape the roadmap and our processes — your day-to-day tax experience directly informs what we build next and how we work.

  • Work closely with tax professionals to understand their needs and challenges, providing technical solutions to enhance their workflow.

  • Partner with engineering and design to shape the roadmap for tax-document automation, prioritizing based on what accountants actually need.

Some specifics

  • Tax expertise (required):

    • 3–5+ years total, with at least 3 in tax.

    • Proven expertise in individual (Form 1040) tax. Candidates with strong trust, estate, or state tax experience — including state-level work on partnership (Form 1065) returns — are equally encouraged to apply.

    • Senior Tax Associate level preferred; an experienced Tax Associate will be considered.

    • Previous employment at a top ~20 accounting firm (Big 4, Grant Thornton, or similar).

    • Hands-on familiarity with mainstream tax prep software (a plus if you've worked across several).

    Nice-to-have tax experience:

    • High-net-worth individual tax — preferred.

    • Foreign / international tax.

    • Trust & estate tax.

    Product & collaboration:

    • Structured, detail-obsessed thinker — you can turn the messy tax documents accountants work from into clean, well-organized data, and catch mistakes others miss before they ship.

    • Strong communicator who can bridge deep tax expertise and engineering, own ambiguity, and collaborate with a distributed team.

    • We're working fully in person 5 days per week in downtown SF. We can cover relocation costs for moving to the San Francisco area.

Core Values

  • Championship-winning mindset: We're here to build something incredible - and we do what it takes to achieve this. Outstanding performance is the expectation.

  • Team First: We're low-ego. The team and mission succeeding is what comes first.

  • Tenacious: We're willing to do hard, unglamorous tasks and stick through tough times.

  • Accountant Obsessed: We exist to 10x accountants. We all interact directly with accountants on a regular basis to understand and improve their world.

  • Genuine Fun: We're having fun. It's a grand adventure together, and we're going to surmount never before seen challenges with wonderful teammates.

Compensation

  • $100-175K+ salary + bonus (depending on experience)

  • Full Health, Dental, Vision

  • 401k with match

  • Commuter benefits (parking, public transportation, etc.)

  • Lunch & Dinner onsite

  • Free Equinox membership. Located across the street from the office 🏋️

San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area attracts more startup funding than any other region in the world. Home to Stanford University and UC Berkeley, leading VC firms and several of the world’s most valuable companies, the Bay Area is the place to go for anyone looking to make it big in the tech industry. That said, San Francisco has a lot to offer beyond technology thanks to a thriving art and music scene, excellent food and a short drive to several of the country’s most beautiful recreational areas.

Key Facts About San Francisco Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 365,500; 13.9% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Google, Apple, Salesforce, Meta
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, fintech, consumer technology, software
  • Funding Landscape: $50.5 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Greylock Partners, Khosla Ventures, Kleiner Perkins
  • Research Centers and Universities: Stanford University; University of California, Berkeley; University of San Francisco; Santa Clara University; Ames Research Center; Center for AI Safety; California Institute for Regenerative Medicine
