About Opal Security:

At Opal, we’re building modern identity governance for the AI era—intelligent access management that empowers enterprises to move fast while staying secure. Our mission is to bring clarity, control, and confidence to complex enterprise environments, helping teams govern access without slowing down innovation.

The Role:

Identity is having a moment. Every company is deploying agents, spinning up service accounts, and realizing their IAM stack can't keep up. We're building AI-native security that scales with this chaos and companies like Databricks, Cloudflare, and Figma are betting on us to get it right.

You will own Opal's product direction and execution as our sole product manager. You'll work directly with security and engineering teams at Fortune 500s and startups alike, understand their messy reality, and determine our position as a leader in IAM. You’ll report directly into our CTO and work hand in hand with our engineering team.

Please note: We've built a team that works exceptionally well together and has fun doing so. We're looking to bring on new teammates who will both add to and grow with what we're building 🙂

Your Responsibilities:

  • Own product strategy from insight to execution. Own what we build and where we expand, work directly with customers to validate direction, partner with engineering on technical strategy, and ensure our roadmap positions us to win in IAM.

  • Architect our platform to unify human and non-human identity governance across hybrid environments by making sense of on-prem AD, cloud IAM, SaaS apps, and AI agents.

  • Lead our evolution from fast and flexible to enterprise-grade at scale without losing what developers love about us.

  • Drive category creation and position Opal as the authorization intelligence layer, not just another point solution in a crowded IAM landscape.

  • Define the future for Opal and for Identity

Our Ideal Candidate Loves to:

  • Think strategically: you can look at market dynamics, customer feedback, and technical constraints to determine the right direction forward.

  • Build platforms, not just features: you understand API strategy, developer experience, and how to create extensible systems that others build on.

  • Thrive in undefined spaces: you get energized by ambiguous problems where there's no playbook. You'd rather figure out what to build than refine an existing roadmap.

  • Work across the stack: you're comfortable talking technical architecture with engineers, doing the boring admin work, and owning business outcomes with customers.

  • Most importantly - shape a category: you're excited about defining what AI-native IAM means and building the product that becomes the standard.

What You Bring:

  • 6+ years in product management, owning a highly technical product or solution in the security space

  • Track record building 1-to-n products and scaling them

  • Ability to drive high performant engineering output

  • Either a degree in computer science or you categorize yourself as a pseudo/honorary engineer

Key Facts About San Francisco Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 365,500; 13.9% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Google, Apple, Salesforce, Meta
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, fintech, consumer technology, software
  • Funding Landscape: $50.5 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Greylock Partners, Khosla Ventures, Kleiner Perkins
  • Research Centers and Universities: Stanford University; University of California, Berkeley; University of San Francisco; Santa Clara University; Ames Research Center; Center for AI Safety; California Institute for Regenerative Medicine
