Job Description

A bit about this role:

The Reinsurance and Statutory Capital Strategist is a key financial and risk leader responsible for designing, executing, and optimizing our enterprise reinsurance architecture and statutory capital strategy. This role plays a vital part in maintaining corporate solvency, optimizing risk-adjusted returns, enhancing capital efficiency, and supporting enterprise growth across regulated insurance entities.

This position demands deep experience navigating reinsurance structuring, captive creation and management, affiliate reinsurance arrangements, and statutory capital frameworks. We welcome candidates from across the insurance spectrum: while health insurance experience is preferred, extensive expertise gained within Property & Casualty (P&C), Life, or multi-line re/insurance environments is fully applicable and highly valued.

Beyond technical structuring, success in this role hinges on operational execution, regulatory rigor, and cross-functional leadership: managing high-stakes relationships with insurance regulators, leading statutory audit examinations, hitting filing deadlines, and working collaboratively with executive leadership, treasury, actuarial, and legal teams.

We place the highest value on proven real-world execution, transaction experience, and collaborative leadership. While professional credentials are recognized, a track record of successfully executing reinsurance transactions and optimizing statutory capital is what truly defines success in this role.

Your Responsibilities and Impact will include:

Reinsurance Strategy, Captives & Risk Transfer Architecture

  • Reinsurance Program Design & Placement: Lead the end-to-end evaluation, structuring, negotiation, and placement of enterprise reinsurance solutions (e.g., quota share, excess of loss, stop-loss, and prospective/retrospective risk transfer structures).
  • Captive Management & Formation: Oversee the operational, financial, and strategic management of captive insurance entities; evaluate and execute captive opportunities to optimize risk retention, tax efficiency, and capital deployment.
  • Affiliate Reinsurance & Intercompany Structuring: Design, implement, and maintain intercompany quota share and affiliate reinsurance arrangements to align risk profiles, manage entity-level capital requirements, and optimize group-wide statutory surplus.
  • Broker & Reinsurer Relationship Management: Serve as the primary liaison to external reinsurance brokers, global reinsurers, and ratings agencies, fostering strong counterparty relationships and securing optimal pricing, terms, and risk-transfer capacity.

Statutory Capital Optimization & Financial Strategy

  • Statutory Capital & RBC Management: Monitor, model, and optimize statutory capital positions, Risk-Based Capital (RBC) ratios, and surplus requirements across all operating risk-bearing legal entities.
  • Capital Strategy & Forecasting: Partner with Treasury, Actuarial, and Corporate Finance to develop long-term capital allocation models, stress test statutory balance sheets, and evaluate strategic capital-raising or risk-mitigation initiatives.
  • Accounting & Transaction Accounting: Oversee statutory accounting treatment, collateral requirements (LOCs, trust accounts), and financial reporting entries associated with complex reinsurance contracts and intercompany arrangements.

Regulatory Engagement & Audit Oversight

  • Regulatory Interfacing & Filings: Serve as the lead subject matter expert interfacing with state departments of insurance (DOIs) and insurance commissioners regarding reinsurance agreements, captive operations, Form D filings, and statutory capital plans.
  • External Audit & Examination Management: Lead audit defense and technical reviews with external financial auditors, state exam teams, and independent actuarial reviewers on all matters related to reinsurance credit, statutory risk transfer, and capital adequacy.
  • Regulatory Compliance & Governance: Ensure strict adherence to statutory accounting principles (SAP), NAIC guidelines, Model Regulation requirements, and state-specific insurance holding company rules.

Executive Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Strategic Advisory: Serve as an expert advisor to the CFO, Chief Actuary, Board of Directors, and executive committees on capital management, risk protection, and emerging capital/reinsurance market opportunities.
  • Cross-Functional Integration: Collaborate seamlessly with Actuarial, Underwriting, Legal, Finance, Tax, and Claims teams to ensure reinsurance terms, claims recovery procedures, and capital strategies align with operational capabilities and corporate goals.

Required skills and experience:

(Hands-on execution ability, proven transaction history, and collaborative performance take precedence over formal degrees or certifications).

  • Deep Reinsurance & Capital Expertise: 8+ years of progressive experience in reinsurance, capital management, corporate finance, or risk transfer, with a proven track record of designing and placing complex reinsurance structures.
  • Captive & Affiliate Structuring: Hands-on experience structuring and/or managing captive insurance entities, intercompany reinsurance transactions, or affiliate risk-pooling mechanisms.
  • Cross-Industry Background Welcome: Deep experience within Health Insurance, Property & Casualty (P&C), Life, or Reinsurance Brokerage/Underwriting is fully accepted and valued.
  • Statutory Capital & Accounting Mastery: Thorough understanding of statutory accounting principles (SAP), Risk-Based Capital (RBC) mechanics, statutory surplus management, and NAIC regulatory frameworks.
  • Regulatory & Audit Interfacing: Demonstrated track record of directly engaging state insurance regulators, managing financial examinations, and securing approval for regulatory filings (e.g., Form D intercompany agreements).
  • Collaborative Leadership & Negotiation: Strong negotiation and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build consensus across internal finance/legal teams and external brokers, reinsurers, and regulatory bodies.

Desired skills and experience:

(Degrees or professional credentials are preferred but not required; equivalent practical mastery and demonstrated track record are fully recognized).

  • Healthcare Insurance Exposure: Prior experience within managed care, health insurance statutory capital, or healthcare stop-loss/quota-share markets is a plus, but not required.
  • Credentials (Optional): Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA), Casualty Actuarial Society (FCAS/ACAS), or CPA/CFA designations are considered a bonus, but are not required where robust, relevant job experience is demonstrated.
