Hardware Test Engineer - Reliability

Hardware Test Engineers at Lunar Energy play a critical role in helping our engineering team decide whether our home energy products are ready to ship, and own the evidence behind that call. You'll design and automate the test stands that collect critical product performance data and analyze that data to work out the “so what.” An ideal candidate is curious, hands-on, and comfortable working across electrical, mechanical, thermal, and software disciplines.

Lunar Energy was founded to transition homes to 100% clean energy—making our electricity greener, our air cleaner and our energy more safe, secure and reliable for all. We’re a fast-growing, global company building the world’s best clean energy products to electrify all homes and connect communities to form clean, resilient virtual power plants.

On a given day at Lunar, you’ll likely…

  • Be a critical part of validating Lunar’s power converters (inverters, DC-DC converters, solar optimizers) and battery systems end to end: test planning, test stand development, execution, data analysis, failure analysis, and reporting.
  • Help develop test specifications from the ground up that reflect representative field conditions. Translate field data, product behavior, and known failure modes into stress profiles that target the product’s physics of failure.
  • Develop detailed functional test plans that cover a complex product’s many functions, balancing thoroughness against scalability across large sample sizes.
  • Design and develop custom test stands for electrical, thermal, and mechanical testing.
    • Define test stand architecture, specify equipment and instrumentation, and work with technicians to design and fabricate the stands.
    • Write Python test software to automate testing and process large datasets.
    • Continuously improve test infrastructure, from software tools to custom test equipment, to help us get more data and insight with less effort.
  • Help drive failure analysis for test failures, and support root cause analysis for field failures.
  • Analyze test data and FA results for root cause analysis, and help determine the next critical piece of data or experiment to prove or disprove a failure hypothesis.
  • Document and communicate test results to cross-functional teams with conclusions, test limitations/caveats, confidence levels, and engineering recommendations. Treat testing as a learning process to understand the physics behind product performance.
  • Work alongside a cross-functional team and learn across disciplines (electrical, mechanical, firmware, manufacturing, and more) to work out how different design and process changes affect reliability, and subsequently our validation strategy.

Desired Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or engineering physics required; mechatronics/robotics concentration is a plus
  • Strong sense of curiosity and ownership, ability to work in a dynamic and fast paced environment
  • Strong engineering fundamentals in one or more of the following disciplines: electronics/circuit analysis, heat and mass transfer, and statics/mechanics of materials
  • Experience with electrical test equipment (power supplies, data acquisition systems) and standard diagnostic tools (multimeters, oscilloscopes) required
  • Python or equivalent programming experience required; experience with object-oriented programming, state machines, and test automation is a plus
  • Basic mechanical design or CAD experience is a plus
  • Experience testing power electronics or battery systems is a plus

Benefits:

We’re dedicated to creating a remarkable employee experience. At Lunar, competitive base pay is one part of our total compensation package. Lunar employees also have the opportunity to become Lunar shareholders by getting equity in a fast-growing company and participating in our employee stock program.

Additional benefits include:

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and dependents
  • Flexible Paid Time Off plus 10 paid holidays
  • Tax deferred 401(k) plan
  • Paid parental leave for all full time employees including 12 weeks paid parental leave for the birthing mother and 6 weeks paid parental leave for the non-birthing parent
  • Subsidized EV charging and pre-tax commuter benefits
