About the role

We're looking for a Risk Manager to identify, measure, and manage risk across Atomic's growing group of regulated entities, including a FINRA-registered broker-dealer and an SEC-registered investment adviser. You'll report to [reporting line to be confirmed], work closely with leadership across finance, compliance, legal, operations, and engineering, and have direct access to the company's Risk Committee.

As our first dedicated risk hire, you'll have the opportunity to build the risk management function from the ground up: designing the framework, policies, metrics, and reporting the company will rely on as it scales, including the control framework for our planned self-clearing and alternative trading system (ATS) business lines.

Atomic is a remote-first company, and this role is fully remote; however, candidates must be based in the US or LATAM in the Americas Timezone (GMT-3 to GMT-8).

Key Responsibilities
  • Build the risk management function as the initial hire, including an enterprise risk framework, risk appetite, and policies appropriate for a multi-entity fintech, with initial and primary focus on the broker-dealer entity.

  • Support and enhance the monitoring of broker-dealer financial risks, including net capital, liquidity, and clearing-related exposures.

  • Assess and monitor bank and counterparty risk, including banks participating in the cash sweep program, clearing firms, and key vendors, with risk ratings, KRIs, and re-review triggers.

  • Run periodic enterprise risk assessments across the broker-dealer, RIA, and technology entities, and maintain the risk register.

  • Build and maintain a risk and control matrix across all entities. Work with process owners to design practical preventive and detective controls, test them for design and operating effectiveness, and develop key risk indicators (KRIs).

  • Own a central incident and issue log: lead root-cause analysis, track remediation to validated closure, and escalate potential reportable events to Compliance, Legal, and the FinOp.

  • Review new products, entities, and markets for risk before launch and recommend appropriate controls.

  • Build controls for the planned self-clearing and ATS business lines, including reserve computations, daily net capital monitoring, possession and control, reconciliations, and Reg ATS obligations, and provide control evidence for FINRA's review.

  • Prepare risk reporting for senior management and the Risk Committee.

  • Support audits and regulatory examinations by coordinating risk-related requests and responses.

  • Maintain the business continuity plan (FINRA Rule 4370) and run tabletop exercises with Technology.

  • Partner with key stakeholders across finance, compliance, legal, operations, and engineering leadership.

Qualifications
  • 2–5 years of experience in risk management, internal controls, or a related function

  • Experience in fintech, banking, brokerage, or RIA environments

  • Hands-on, builder mindset: comfortable in a small firm, and focused on fixing issues with teams rather than only documenting them

  • Working knowledge of broker-dealer financial responsibility rules (e.g., SEC net capital and customer protection rules)

  • Understanding of operational, credit/counterparty, and liquidity risk concepts

  • Strong analytical skills and proficiency in Excel or similar tools; experience with NetSuite or another ERP is helpful

  • Advanced-level English for cross-team collaboration

Nice to Have
  • External or internal audit experience, or experience at a regulatory agency (e.g., FINRA, SEC, or a banking regulator).

  • Professional certification such as FRM, CPA, CIA, or CRCM.
