The Nursing Supervisor works directly with the Manager and other members of the leadership team providing supervisory coverage to the nursing unit and other patient care areas. The Supervisor works to develop nursing staff including education, competency, performance evaluation and correction, and resolution of issues related to patient safety and customer service. The Supervisor must be knowledgeable regarding hospital and nursing policies and procedures and be able to practice independent judgement.

Additional Job Description:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. Bachelors of Science in Nursing + 2 years nursing experience OR Associates of Science in Nursing + 4 years of nursing experience.

2. Current unencumbered licensure with the WV Board of Registered Professional Nurses, or appropriate state board where services will be provided, as a registered professional nurse OR Current multi-state licensure through the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).

3. Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.

4. State criminal background check, and federal, if applicable, as required for state department of health (e.g. PA DOH, OH DOH, MD DOH, WV DHHR) regulated areas based on physical work location.

EXPERIENCE:

1. Two (2) years nursing experience

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position.  They are not intended to be constructed as an all-inclusive list of all responsibilities and duties.  Other duties may be assigned.

1. Assist the manager/director with interviews, selection and orientation of departmental staff.

2. In collaboration with the manager/director and HR determines appropriate levels of discipline up to and including terminations. 

3. Responsible for providing performance feedback to assigned staff to include, but not limited to: Performance Appraisals, formal and informal coaching, and Performance Improvement Plans (PIP).

4. Conducts monthly staff meetings to communicate information, to develop departmental goals, to solve patient care and departmental problems, and to encourage cooperative, collaborative relationships and promote team efforts.

5. Encourages professional development of departmental personnel through in-service education and external education programs.

6. Schedules and adjusts staffing to meet patient care needs considering staff competency, established standards and regulatory requirements.

7. Inform manager/director of budgetary needs and exercise proper stewardship through the appropriate use of supplies, equipment, and personnel.  Flexing of staff schedules to maintain budget based on fluctuations of patient census and productivity.

8. Maintains and reports departmental information and statistics for administrative and regulatory purposes meeting the required time standards.

9. Assist manager/director in the development, implementation, and maintenance of policies, procedures, standards of care and practice for the department regarding budget and financial issues.

10. Follows hospital, state and federal guidelines for ensuring safe environment for workers, patients and public.  Maintains and monitors staff compliance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures for safety, security, and infection control.

11. Ensures the facilities and equipment for department services is maintained to promote comfort, efficiency and safety for patients and staff.

12. Provides clinical services consistent with licensure when necessary to ensure unit/department is operating efficiently and effectively.

13. Communicates and interacts with patients, families, visitors, physicians, departmental and hospital staff and the public in general in a manner that demonstrates professionalism and concern for the individuals' need(s).

14. Remains current and responsive to changes in healthcare delivery, standards established by professional organizations, regulatory and accrediting bodies and the needs of the organization.

15. Provides regular and ongoing education to staff based on accreditation and needs assessments. Maintains record of competency

16. Assists manager/director in developing and implementing processes to assess and improve the services provided and compliance with regulatory requirements. Reports results to appropriate administrative levels.

17. Participates, encourages and facilitates the participation of staff, in hospital-wide process improvement efforts as needed.

18. Responsible for oversight and processing of staff payroll and PTO request.

1. Able to wear latex or vinyl gloves, with frequent changes and hand washing. Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).  Cap; Gown; Mask; Eye cover; Gloves; Waterproof  Shoe covers, prn; Lead Apron, prn; Laser Glasses, prn.

2. Must meet Department of Labor’s MEDIUM duty standard (MEDIUM WORK- exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly). Able to bend, stoop, reach and be capable of normal rotation, standing and walking for an 11-12 hour shift. Able to ambulate, position, turn and pull up self-assisting adult patients.
