About Springcraft

Today, building robots and intelligent machines means navigating fragmented tools, incompatible hardware, and closed ecosystems. It takes too long, costs too much, and locks builders in.

There is no default platform for physical AI. We're building it.

Springcraft brings together purpose-built hardware, developer tools, and AI models into one open, integrated system so that builders can create machines that sense, understand, and act in the real world.

Founded by the team behind 8th Wall, the largest AR platform for the web (acquired by Niantic), we bring deep experience in spatial computing. Backed by Night Capital, Eric Semler of TCS Capital, Village Global, and exceptional angels, we're based in Palo Alto and hiring our core team now.

The Role

As a Software Engineer (Robotics AI), you will build the intelligence layer of the Springcraft platform, curating, fine-tuning, and developing AI models that let builders add intelligence to their products without needing a research team.

This is a foundational hire. You'll define how AI works across every product on the platform.

Springcraft is built on open hardware and open standards. The AI tools and models you build will be used by developers, researchers, and builders around the world.

What You'll Do

  • Curate, integrate, and fine-tune open-source foundation models for robotics perception and motion control
  • Build and maintain the platform's AI model library and fine-tuning tools
  • Develop simulation-based training, data collection, and deployment pipelines
  • Design APIs and tooling that expose AI capabilities to platform developers
  • Collaborate with the Software Engineer to integrate AI features into the developer platform
  • Collaborate with the Mechatronics Engineer to connect models to hardware and firmware
  • Optimize model inference for production deployment
  • Evaluate and benchmark emerging foundation models for platform integration
  • Contribute to developer documentation for AI tools and models

What We're Looking For

  • 2+ years of professional or academic experience in ML engineering or robotics AI
  • Strong Python and ML framework experience (PyTorch, JAX, or equivalent)
  • Experience with robot learning, perception, or foundation models
  • Ability to ship ML systems in production, not just research prototypes
  • Authorized to work in the United States, we are unable to sponsor work visas at this time

Nice to Have

  • Familiarity with sim-to-real transfer or robotics simulation environments
  • Experience deploying ML inference on edge hardware
  • Published research or open-source contributions in robotics and AI

Location

Palo Alto, CA (In-Person)

Compensation

  • Competitive salary ($120,000–$190,000) + meaningful early-stage equity
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Paid time off and holidays

What you need to know about the San Francisco Tech Scene

San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area attracts more startup funding than any other region in the world. Home to Stanford University and UC Berkeley, leading VC firms and several of the world’s most valuable companies, the Bay Area is the place to go for anyone looking to make it big in the tech industry. That said, San Francisco has a lot to offer beyond technology thanks to a thriving art and music scene, excellent food and a short drive to several of the country’s most beautiful recreational areas.

Key Facts About San Francisco Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 365,500; 13.9% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Google, Apple, Salesforce, Meta
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, fintech, consumer technology, software
  • Funding Landscape: $50.5 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Greylock Partners, Khosla Ventures, Kleiner Perkins
  • Research Centers and Universities: Stanford University; University of California, Berkeley; University of San Francisco; Santa Clara University; Ames Research Center; Center for AI Safety; California Institute for Regenerative Medicine
