Conduct outbound prospecting to identify companies that need PlanetScale, research their technical infrastructure and business needs, and create AI-assisted campaigns using tools such as Claude and Clay. Engage engineers and technical leaders, qualify opportunities, build pipeline, and identify effective outbound strategies. The role also contributes to developing the company’s outbound playbook and automating repetitive sales work.

PlanetScale is growing rapidly and reinventing the transactional database market. The PlanetScale platform offers both Postgres and Vitess clusters. Vitess, an open-source database clustering system for horizontal scaling of MySQL, enables businesses to efficiently handle large-scale data workloads — without sacrificing developer experience.
PlanetScale is backed with over $100M in venture financing from top-tier VCs including a16z, Kleiner Perkins, SignalFire, and Insight Venture Partners. And we serve some of the most innovative companies in the world such as Block, Anysphere (Cursor), MyFitnessPal, Etsy, Kick, and thousands more. Our customers entrust us with what is often their most precious digital asset, their data, so the stakes couldn't be higher. We're looking for early members of our Sales team that can form deep partnerships with our prospects and customers to help them adopt and succeed on the next generation of database infrastructure.

We host the databases behind companies like Cash App, Intercom, and Cursor. In other words: important databases.

We’re hiring a dedicated outbound SDR. You won’t inherit a dusty playbook assembled in 2017 and be told to “just add personalization.” You’ll help us build an AI-native outbound motion from the ground up. You’ll work with modern tools, help create the playbook, and have input into how we build outbound from here. This role is for someone who wants to sell, experiment, automate repetitive work, and learn how great infrastructure companies go to market.

If that sounds exciting, and slightly intimidating, that’s probably a good sign!

What ‘s the job to be done?
  • Find promising companies that should be using PlanetScale, but aren’t yet.
  • Research their architecture, growth, and likely infrastructure problems.
  • Build creative outbound campaigns using tools like Claude and Clay.
  • Talk to engineers and technical leaders without immediately saying, “Let me bring in someone technical.”
  • Turn interest into real pipeline: a mapped buyer, an actual problem, and a reason to solve it now.
  • Help determine what works, what doesn’t, and what we should scale.
These attributes describe you.
  • You have 1+ year of quota-carrying SDR or BDR experience.
  • You’ve consistently hit your number.
  • You’re early in your career, ambitious, and learning quickly.
  • You already use AI to improve how you work—not just to rewrite emails with the word “delve.”
  • You can show us something you built with Claude, Clay, or another AI tool and explain how it made you better or faster.
  • When you encounter repetitive work, your first thought is, “Could a robot do this?”
  • You’re curious about databases, infrastructure, and how modern AI companies are built.
  • You actively seek feedback rather than treating it as a personal attack.
What you will need.

Not literal points. We do not have a leaderboard. But these will help:

  • You’ve sold to engineers, platform teams, or infrastructure buyers.
  • You’ve worked in developer tools, infrastructure, or open source.
  • You’ve used Clay, Unify, Outreach, Salesloft, Gong, or Salesforce.
  • You’ve worked somewhere with a real outbound playbook and know which parts are worth keeping.
  • You can explain what a database does without checking Wikipedia first.

Home to Stanford University and UC Berkeley, leading VC firms and several of the world’s most valuable companies, the Bay Area is the place to go for anyone looking to make it big in the tech industry. • Major Tech Employers: Google, Apple, Salesforce, Meta
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, fintech, consumer technology, software
  • Funding Landscape: $50.5 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
