About Grafton Sciences

We’re building AI systems with general physical ability — the capacity to experiment, engineer, or manufacture anything. We believe achieving this is a key step towards building superintelligence. With deep technical roots and real-world progress at scale (e.g., a $42M NIH project), we’re pushing the frontier of physical AI. Joining us means inventing from first principles, owning real systems end-to-end, and helping build a capability the world has never had before.

About the Role

We’re seeking a Senior Electrical/Firmware Engineer to design the electronics and embedded systems that power advanced robotics, automation, and experimental tooling. You’ll own board design, sensor/actuator integration, motor drivers, safety circuits, and real-time firmware for deterministic, reliable operation. This is a hands-on role with deep ownership across hardware bring-up, embedded software architecture, debugging, and system integration.

Responsibilities

• Design PCBs, power systems, sensor interfaces, motor drivers, and embedded control electronics for robotic and automation systems.
• Develop real-time firmware for MCUs, integrating sensors, actuators, communication buses, and safety interlocks.
• Handle bring-up, debugging, calibration, and reliability testing of electromechanical subsystems.
• Collaborate closely with mechanical, robotics, and automation engineers to build robust, production-ready electromechanical systems.

Qualifications

• Strong experience designing and bringing up embedded hardware: schematics, layout, power systems, sensors, and motor/actuator interfaces.
• Demonstrated ability to write robust firmware for real-time control on MCUs (e.g., STM32, ESP32, PIC, Nordic, TI).
• Hands-on debugging skills across oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, JTAG/SWD, signal integrity, and system-level integration.
• Comfortable working across hardware and firmware boundaries in fast-moving, interdisciplinary engineering environments.

Above all, we look for candidates who can demonstrate world-class excellence.

Compensation

We offer competitive salary, meaningful equity, and benefits.

What you need to know about the San Francisco Tech Scene

San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area attracts more startup funding than any other region in the world. Home to Stanford University and UC Berkeley, leading VC firms and several of the world’s most valuable companies, the Bay Area is the place to go for anyone looking to make it big in the tech industry. That said, San Francisco has a lot to offer beyond technology thanks to a thriving art and music scene, excellent food and a short drive to several of the country’s most beautiful recreational areas.

Key Facts About San Francisco Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 365,500; 13.9% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Google, Apple, Salesforce, Meta
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, fintech, consumer technology, software
  • Funding Landscape: $50.5 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Greylock Partners, Khosla Ventures, Kleiner Perkins
  • Research Centers and Universities: Stanford University; University of California, Berkeley; University of San Francisco; Santa Clara University; Ames Research Center; Center for AI Safety; California Institute for Regenerative Medicine
