Description

Responsible for planning and conducting design work on building structures requiring advanced judgment in the evaluation, selection and application of engineering techniques. Experience with procedures and criteria for various project types, including but not limited to concrete, steel, masonry, and wood. Works closely with project team internally and externally to deliver projects. Coach and Mentor junior staff. Project Management responsibilities including scheduling, internal resource management and project financial performance. Work closely with the management team to coordinate project teams in achieving client outcome and contribute to team’s success by efficiently delivering high quality engineering services. Steward the technical development of staff engineers. Introduction to business development.

Requirements

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical

Under close supervision, performs a variety of engineering tasks, including:

  • Performs engineering design tasks with limited guidance for up to level 3 projects.
  • Performs engineering design tasks with guidance for level 4 projects and above.
  • Conducts or monitor research.
  • Build and debug engineering model as needed.
  • Review, understand, and interpret data outputs from engineering model to comply with building code.
  • Formulate and solve complex problems with guidance.
  • Provide guidance to engineering design tasks.
  • Preparing drawings and visual aids with up to level 3 projects.
  • Provide guidance for drawings production.
  • Perform construction activities for up to level 2 projects without guidance.
  • Perform construction activities for up to level 3 projects with guidance.
  • Assist in construction activities with guidance for level 4 projects and above.
  • Provide guidance for construction activities.
  • Review and recommend construction activities QA/QC.

Project Management

  • Assigns tasks to and directs engineers and administrative staff (such as Eng. Standards task assignment, performance review).
  • Plans and coordinates detailed aspects of the engineering work.
  • Prepares scope, budget and schedules for assignments.
  • Assign task to engineering staff. Conduct Kickoff Meetings, briefing employees on their respective tasks assigned. This briefing should include technical components and time/cost expectations. Prepare a resource plan outlining the resources required to complete the scope within the schedule.
  • Understand and execute the scope, project fee structure and contractual obligations we have agreed with our client. Bring work requested by the client that is outside of the agreement to the attention of the Associate/PIC as appropriate per project basis/complexity level III and up. Write Additional Service Requests (ASR’s) when additional scope is requested for project complexity I and up.
  • Communicate regularly with the PIC during the duration of the project and Notify the PIC immediately should the scope, complexity or schedule for the project change.
  • Demonstrate proficient time management skills, and help others increase their time management skills by helping to prioritize and realistically set goals/deadlines.
  • Ensure and perform QA/QC protocol for all tasks for which you are responsible for project complexity III and below. Recognize and alert Associate/PIC if a project is potentially going off track and needs intervention to get back on track.
  • Ensure client service expectation are upheld. Identify ways to extend and/or expand client relationships
  • Monitor financial performance on projects and recommend adjustments as needed. Assist with billing inquiry for small projects.
  • Gain understanding of QA/QC protocol for all tasks for which you are responsible.
  • Gain understanding of client service expectation.
  • Gain understanding of key financial performance indicators for successful project completion, including on-time and on-budget objectives.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings to coordinate staffing needs (beyond your own) with other Senior Engineers/Associates/PIC
  • Manage up to Level III projects.

Other duties and responsibilities

  • Assists with proposals to provide professional services and may prepare on smaller proposals where appropriate.
  • Identify and recommend enhancements to operational procedures to improve efficiency etc.
  • Awareness and understanding of organizational risk associated with technical, legal and financial items.
  • Oversee development of Engineering and Drawing standard SOP. Identify new standards to improve efficiency etc.
  • Participate and conduct hiring interview. Make recommendation on hiring decision(s).
  • Coach staff by providing guidance and help Structural Designers and Project Engineers to increase their skills.
  • Participate in the performance review/feedback process, gather feedback to share with leadership about team performance.
  • Conduct presentations both internally and externally. Participate in proposal presentations.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients and network groups.
  • Understand how role fits into the larger strategic plan of the organization.
  • Leverage existing relationships to make introductions between prospective and/or existing clients and the Sr. Leadership Team.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES)

  • B.S. and/or M.S. Degree in Civil / Structural Engineering and/or Masters’ degree in Structural Engineering or 8 years of related experience.
  • 6+ years working in the field of structural engineering.
  • CA Professional Engineer License and working towards CA Structural Engineer License
  • Working towards LEED AP Certification
  • Ability to lead by example.
  • Embraces life-long learning, staying current with industry trends. Formulate ideas into actionable steps the company should take to stay relevant.
  • Routinely interacts with clients, customers, officials, contractors, and others. Possesses advanced oral and written communication skills. Represents the organization in communications and conferences. Pertaining to broad-aspects of engineering assignments.
  • Advanced understanding of Enercalc, Bluebeam, Risa 3D, Google Suite, and Deltek VP. Intermediate understanding of Risa Floor and Risa Connection.
  • Ability to use MS Office products.
  • Member of SEAONC or industry related organization encouraged.
  • Engaged in community service programs – helping to organize and lead initiatives.
  • Ability to travel to other locations to work on projects as needed.
  • Analytical and critical problem-solving skills.
