ImpactThe Senior Engineering Manager – Fullstack Mobile role is a senior people and technology leader within Shipt’s Gig Operations engineering organization. This role reports directly to the Director of Engineering for Gig Ops Fulfillment and is responsible for leading 10+ engineers across mobile frontend and backend disciplines.
This leader oversees one or more agile software development squads, driving long-term technical strategy, engineering excellence, delivery predictability, and team health across diverse experiences and capabilities. Compared to the Engineering Manager role, the Senior Engineering Manager operates with broader ownership, deeper architectural influence, higher cross-functional visibility, a wider breadth of stakeholders, and increased responsibility for scaling teams, managing complex initiatives, and shaping engineering culture.
Senior Engineering Managers collaborate with Staff & Principal Engineers, Product Managers, UX Designers & Managers, Data Scientists, Operations Managers, and partner engineering teams to execute against multi-quarter roadmaps, strengthen engineering fundamentals, develop talent to meet engineering expectations of the next level, remove organizational bottlenecks, and guide engineers through ambiguity with clarity and strategic direction.
This is a high-impact role that requires strong technical depth, exceptional leadership maturity, strategic decision-making, and the ability to steward tech assets and engineering teams through modernization and AI-driven transformation.

What You’ll Need to Be Successful
Strategic Technical Leadership
  • Lead and influence architectural direction across frontend (React Native) and backend (Golang microservices, Kafka, Google Cloud Platform, backend-for-frontend, vendor integrations) domains.

  • Partner with Engineering, Product, UX, Data Science, and Operations leaders to define multi-quarter modernization plans, system migrations, quality bars, and domain boundaries.

  • Ensure teams consistently adopt modern practices (architectural patterns, observability, performance optimization, AI-assisted development).

  • Oversee the technical strategy for your areas of responsibility, ensuring alignment with Shipt- or department-wide architectural principles and long-term company goals.

  • Drive cross-team technical initiatives that improve stability, reliability, and operational excellence.

Cross-Discipline Leadership
  • Own delivery for frontend experiences and backend capabilities, ensuring predictable execution against roadmaps, OKRs, and quarterly commitments.

  • Lead technical planning cycles — capacity planning, dependency mapping, long-range planning, and risk mitigation.

  • Drive resolution for complex cross-functional blockers, escalating when necessary.

  • Establish processes that improve productivity, throughput, rollout safety, code quality, and release cadence.

  • Ensure high operational readiness across all owned services — SLOs, observability instrumentation, dashboards, runbooks, on-call rotations, and alert tuning.

People Leadership & Organizational Scaling
  • Manage 10+ engineers across disciplines and levels.

  • Guide career development through structured mentorship, progression frameworks, and personalized growth plans to meet and exceed engineering expectations.

  • Establish high talent density through strong hiring, rigorous performance management, and mentorship programs.

  • Scale and size teams sustainably, anticipating skill gaps, capacity needs, and future organizational structures.

  • Build and reinforce a culture of high accountability, ownership, and continuous improvement toward the demonstration of Shipt Values.

Cross-Functional Stakeholder Management & Influence
  • Serve as the primary engineering partner to Product, UX, Data Science, and Operations for your areas of responsibility.

  • Translate product strategy, internal customer needs, and business outcomes into technical direction and execution plans.

  • Influence prioritization and sequencing decisions through strong technical judgment and data-driven reasoning.

  • Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders across Gig Ops, Marketplace, Partner Engineering, Infrastructure, Fraud, Compliance, and Data Science.

  • Communicate progress, risks, blockers, trade-offs, and decisions — early, clearly, and often — to leaders and partners.

Engineering Excellence & Continuous Improvement
  • Champion AI-assisted engineering practices — expanding use of Copilot, Gemini, automated test agents, refactoring agents, and intelligent developer workflows.

  • Improve engineering fundamentals across code quality, testing maturity, observability, scalability, and architectural hygiene.

  • Establish and continuously improve product team working agreements drawing from expertise and experience with multiple agile software development methodologies.

  • Lead agile ceremonies (e.g., sprint planning, backlog refinement, stand-ups, demos, retrospectives).

  • Lead post-incident reviews and systemic corrective action initiatives across multiple teams.

  • Establish and drive engineering metrics (DORA, quality KPIs, incident metrics, velocity, cycle times).

  • Promote a culture that values learning, experimentation, craftsmanship, and psychological safety.

Candidate ProfileQualifications
  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 7+ years of professional engineering experience, preferably building customer-facing or critical realtime systems.

  • 2+ years of formal engineering people leadership, including managing multiple engineers or teams.

  • Proven experience designing and delivering distributed, high-availability, scalable systems.

Technical Leadership ProficienciesFullstack Mobile Engineering Expertise
  • Ability to guide engineers across multiple disciplines:

  • Frontend (React Native)

  • Backend (Golang, REST APIs, Kafka, Postgres, Redis, scaling and resiliency patterns)

Architecture, Systems, & Modernization
  • Understanding of large-scale system design, domain-driven architecture, event modeling, and service contracts.

  • Experience guiding modernization efforts — service decomposition, platform / vendor migrations, performance rewrites, observability upgrades.

Engineering Metrics & Operational Maturity
  • Strong fluency in SLOs/SLIs, incident management, root cause analysis, and reliability frameworks.

  • Experience using engineering metrics to guide team-level continuous improvement.

Stakeholder Management & Business Alignment
  • Understanding of last-mile delivery fulfillment and gig work with independent contractors.

  • Ability to align engineering roadmaps with business OKRs, customer outcomes, and long-term strategy.

Team Scaling & Resource Planning
  • Proven ability to scale engineering teams, including capacity planning, performance management, and leveling strategies.

  • Experience in headcount planning, budgeting inputs, and strategic forecasting.

  • Familiarity with agile software development methodologies.

Leadership Behaviors
  • Strategic Thinker: Operates at multi-quarter horizons with strong architectural and organizational awareness.

  • Talent Multiplier: Develops senior engineers into future leaders; builds durable, high-performing teams.

  • Influential Communicator: Navigates ambiguity and influences across engineering, product, and business stakeholders.

  • Operationally Excellent: Instills accountability, high quality craftsmanship, and strong on-call readiness.

  • Culture Builder: Models a high degree of professionalism and professional maturity, and champions Shipt Values of Drive, Rally, Positivity, Authenticity, and Caring.

  • AI-Forward Leader: Encourages responsible adoption of AI-assisted engineering practices appropriate to engineering level and helps position Shipt for AI-native development.

  • Courageous & Principled: Makes difficult decisions when needed, prioritizes ruthlessly, and knows how to pragmatically decide when to ship, when to “do it right,” and when to pay down tech debt.
