Lead the mechanical architecture and development of an autonomous outdoor robot from concept through prototyping, field testing, and small-scale production. Design drivetrains, locomotion, tooling, material handling, and structural systems; integrate actuators, sensors, and power systems; perform structural and dynamic analysis; and prepare designs for manufacturability, reliability, and field service. The role requires hands-on machining, fabrication, outdoor testing, and close collaboration with electrical and mechatronics engineers.

About the company

Our client is an energy technology company.

The role

Raydar is recruiting for this role on behalf of our client. Lead the mechanical design of an autonomous outdoor robot, taking it from early concept through prototyping and into a small production fleet. The work is hands-on and spans design, fabrication and field testing, in close partnership with electrical and mechatronics colleagues.

What you'll do

- Own the overall mechanical architecture of a mobile field robot, including frame, tooling, material handling, drivetrain and locomotion for rough terrain.

- Design, build and iterate on prototypes quickly, machining parts, working with fabrication shops and testing hardware outdoors.

- Select and integrate actuators, sensors and power distribution, working closely with the electrical and mechatronics engineer.

- Carry out structural and dynamic analysis covering loads, vibration, fatigue and stability.

- Prepare the design for a small production run with attention to manufacturability, reliability and ease of field service.

Requirements

What we're looking for

- 7 to 10+ years of experience in mechanical or robotics engineering.

- A track record of personally driving a combined mechanical and electrical machine from first idea to fielded units, not only drafting or passing designs to others.

- Experience at a robotics company building machines that operate in harsh outdoor conditions, such as construction, mining, energy or agriculture technology.

- A bachelor's or master's degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline.

- Experience designing drivetrains, actuation and locomotion for wheeled or tracked mobile robots, including motor sizing, gearboxes and suspension.

- Strong rapid prototyping and hands-on fabrication skills, comfortable in both a shop and the field.

- A self-directed working style and the ability to clear obstacles without waiting for management direction.

- Ability to work on-site five days a week.

- US work authorization.

Bonus points

- Prior time at a demanding, quick-moving startup or technology employer.

- Background in hydraulics or heavy machinery for ground-engaging tools.

What you need to know about the San Francisco Tech Scene

San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area attracts more startup funding than any other region in the world. Home to Stanford University and UC Berkeley, leading VC firms and several of the world’s most valuable companies, the Bay Area is the place to go for anyone looking to make it big in the tech industry. That said, San Francisco has a lot to offer beyond technology thanks to a thriving art and music scene, excellent food and a short drive to several of the country’s most beautiful recreational areas.

Key Facts About San Francisco Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 365,500; 13.9% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Google, Apple, Salesforce, Meta
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, fintech, consumer technology, software
  • Funding Landscape: $50.5 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Greylock Partners, Khosla Ventures, Kleiner Perkins
